  1. Advancing Learner Skills in MI: Coaching to the Finer Points Developed by EckMaahs & Associates, LLC For the MINT Forum, Fort Wayne, Indiana September 12-14, 2012 Presented by Sue EckMaahs, Fran Lesicko and Susan Littrell. Additional thanks to Jane Nakken for assistance with presentation and materials development.

  2. “Agenda”… • Audiotape coaching within the broader MI coaching spectrum • “Learning from our mistakes!”: Preparing learners for coaching with tapes  • Common Pitfalls in Learning MI • Listening for “coaching points” – Audio Exercise • The ABC’s of audiotape based coaching • Practice!

  3. Where does audiotape coaching “fit’ in the coaching spectrum? • MI workshop(s) – with individualized coaching and feedback during training exercises • Small group skill practice/coaching sessions • Individual coaching sessions using discussion and role-play or real-play (face-to-face or telephonic) • Follow up individual coaching sessions using audiotape samples of MI work with clients/patients

  4. Preparing the Learner for the Session • Communicate… • Length of tape or MI segment desired • What you are looking for (MI spirit and core skills) • Clear target & reasons to “guide” in the direction of change (avoid neutral/equipoise situations) • How to use the technology–digital tapes work best with “hands-on” demo around use of recorder and uploading to computer • Not a “test” – done in the spirit of support and learning. The messier the MI, the more you learn! 

  5. Common Pitfalls in Learning MI… • 1. Ramping up the Hopelessness • Sustaining the Sustain Talk • The Mis-Placed Decisional Balance • Barrier Question Fever • 2. Stuck in the Past • Psychotherapy Alley • The Social History Buff

  6. 3. Missing or Moving Target • Skipping from Target to Target • The classic “Check-In” • Non-directive, client-centered listening without a focus • 4. The Cheerleader • The Dog after a Bone • Skimming the Surface • Lost in the Forest • Racing to the Finishline • “E-P-E” without the E

  7. 5. The Dog after a Bone • Evoking with the purpose of proving a point • Change Talk “Pouncing” • 6. Skimming the Surface • ‘Touch ‘n’ Go’ Responses to Change Talk • No depth in planning

  8. 7. Lost in the Forest • Going Nowhere • Going in Circles • 8. Racing to the Finish Line • Exploring the “how” to change and missing the “Why”

  9. 9. “E-P-E” without the “E’s” • The ‘nice’ expert • No exploring of the client’s own ideas/knowledge before asking permission to give advice.

  10. What do you hear? Listening for Strengths and Potential Coaching Points…

  11. Audiotape Coaching Process…One way to do it: • Before meeting the learner, code the tape (if using a coding instrument); note strengths and potential coaching points. • If first session, go over what the two of you will be listening for (i.e., spirit, direction/guiding, OARS, change talk, flow, etc.). • Ask them to ID the target behavior and evoke learner’s perceptions of strengths. • If not first tape, review goals from last session and evoke progress/thoughts.

  12. Coaching Process (cont): • Explain that you will listen together and either party may stop the tape periodically to discuss. • While listening, be sure and reinforce/affirm the strengths and look for learning opportunities to use E-P-E for discovery and practice. • Before ending the session, ask the learner to set 1-3 goals for further practice. • Schedule next tape.

  13. Practice makes PRRRRRfect!
