After two weeks he said to Mother, “I’m sorry, darling, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to wear those slippers.” Mother was a bit disappointed but she understood. “Never mind,” she said, “there’s going to be a sale at the church next week. I’ll give them to Mr. Brown. He will be able to sell them easily.”

  17. There were a lot of good things on the sale. Many people went there — including Grandmother. 24. ◆ Activity 2 Sample —— I will never forget the experience of being lost when I was abroad. It was so terrible! You know, that day I intended go to the National Museum. I had made full preparations, such as finding out its location on the Internet and buying a latest map. But unfortunately, it turned out all wrong. I lost my map on the way to the museum. So I tried to ask passers-by where I was. Most of them were quite friendly, but they spoke English with such a strong accent that I couldn’t understand what they were talking about. At last, I gave up and took a taxi to the hotel where I stayed. What an awful experience!

  25. Part Two Reading Text A Text B

  26. ●Lead-in Activity: Discussion Samples 1. —— I love my mother most because she knows when to be my friend and when to be my mom. Besides, her self-confidence is amazing! She was the strong one when my dad died of cancer. She puts passion into everything she does and takes time to make every event and person feel special. She lives life to the fullest every day.

  27. —— My father is the one I love most. Though he hates to do housework and is too easy-going at times, he has a great passion for life. What is more, he can hold our family together. Whatever difficulties we are facing, he always tells us that everything is going to be fine.

  28. 2. —— I think campus love is comparatively pure. It is romantic that you are together only because you love each other. I experienced campus love when I was a senior student. Of course it did not work out like many other campus lovers, but I never regretted. We broke up about three years ago, and he is now a husband and father. Still I often recall those days when we walked in the autumn sunshine near our campus.

  29. —— In my opinion, campus love is just a waste of time. As you know, while we are still students, we haven’t even started our real lives. It might be too early for us to choose the person we are going to spend the rest of our lives with. Besides, we may have to go to different places after graduation, which makes it nearly impossible for a relationship to work out.

  30. ●Reading ◆ Language Focus 1.John Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through the Grand Central Station. (Para. 1)

  33. the girl with the rose是the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t的同位语,意思是“戴着玫瑰花的女孩”。名词词组可以用作同位语,其功能是对前项提供补充信息。例如: ◆I know James, the eldest son of the Jackson family. 我认识杰克逊家的长子詹姆斯。 ◆Lucy, a talented musician in her youth, still gives concerts every now and then. 露西年轻时是一位有才华的音乐家,现在仍时常 举办音乐会。
