  1. Louisiana Public Schools at a Glance In 2001-2002, there was a total of 730,252 students in the 1,538 public schools in Louisiana. This population comprised of 51.1% male and 48.9% female students. Of the 1,538 public schools, about 46% (706 schools) have middle school grades (6-8), while about 29% (442 schools) have high school grades (9-12). Middle School Activities Overview For 2001-2002, out of the 160,758 students enrolled in grades 6-8, over 102,000 (63.6%) had a student portfolio. At grade 8, a great majority (85.5%) had been identified as having a student portfolio. Of the 160,758 students enrolled in grades 6-8, over 148,000 (92.3%) had completed at least 6 Career Awareness activities. Additionally, 89% of the 8th graders had also completed a 5-year education plan.

  2. High School Activities Overview For 2001-2002, of the 185,174 students enrolled in grades 9-12, over 154,900 (83.7%) had a student portfolio. Of the 185,174 high school students, a great majority (87.4%) had updated their 5-year education plan. Furthermore, 183 (45.5%) of the schools with grades 9-12 had implemented the TEAM (Teachers as Educational Advisors and Mentors) Program. Of over 16,000 high school students enrolled in C&T education programs, a great majority of them (70.3%) expressed interest in pursuing higher education with most wanting to go to a 4-year university. As students moved to higher grades, interest levels for 2-year institutions and work increased, while interest levels for 4-year universities declined.

  3. Career Options Survey Results Of the students surveyed, 71% (35,000) had made a career choice. Additionally, a majority of the students (64%) considered their academic and technical courses as relevant to their future plans. Parents expressed favorable opinions of the career option programs offered at their schools.

  5. Career and Technical Program Offerings The most popular and readily-available career and technical programs were in Agriculture, Architecture & Construction, Business & Administration, Health Science, and Human Services clusters.

Career and Technical Program Offerings The most popular programs/majors within the 16 clusters included: Agriculture, Carpentry, Instrumental Music, Business Administration, Education, Finance, JROTC, Nursing Assistant, Culinary Arts, Home Economics, Information Systems, Police Pre-Cadet, Welding, Marketing, Drafting, and Auto Technician.

  7. Career and Technical Program Offerings The majority of Louisiana high school students (95,000 or 72.3%) were enrolled in programs/majors within clusters 01, 02, 04, and 10.

  8. Career and Technical Program Offerings The most popular programs with the highest dual enrollment included College Prep, Business Administration, Allied Health, Auto Technician, and Welding.

Skills Certification The most popular skills certificates issued to Louisiana students in 2001-2002 included: Certified Nurses Assistant, First Responder, MOUS, Welding Level I, NCCER, Carpentry, General Construction, and Welding, ProStart, CompTIA Certification, CPR First Aid, CDA Child Development, and ASE Certification.

  10. Skills Certification A total of 11,380 students were involved in various work-based learning and school-based enterprise programs. These students generated a total of $14.6 million dollars. Close to 90% of the work-based learning income was generated through the Co-Op programs in Agriculture, Business and Office Administration, Hospitality and Tourism, and in Retail/Whole Sale business.   11. Results for High Schools That Work In 2001-2002, a total of 46,549 students were enrolled in grades 9-12 at 59 HSTW school sites. A majority of these students (88%) had a 5-year education plan. Furthermore, close to 10% of these students were enrolled in school-based enterprise and work-based learning programs.
