Overview • Aceh’s forests are highly diverse and provide important habitats for a range of globally threatened flagship species such as the Sumatran tiger, rhino, elephant and orangutan. • The post-tsunami reconstruction effort and the end of the conflict in Aceh have rapidly increased threats to forest resources. • Aceh’s forests are an important carbon sink. Their protection will assist in global climate change mitigation efforts

Government of Aceh Commitment • December 2008: Governor of Aceh released an environmentally-friendly development strategy for the province, known as ‘Aceh Green’. • Aceh Green aims to rebuild Aceh’s economy following the conflict and tsunami through innovative and sustainable management of Aceh’s natural resources, especially forests.

Policy and Institutional Framework • REDD Taskforce (Technical, Community and Legal working groups established) • Support for REDD from Aceh Parliament • Legal framework (incl. national/provincial harmonisation and carbon title) • Review of existing concessions • Aceh provincial spatial plan reviewsupports REDD activities • Capacity building

  7. Forest Carbon Accounting – Ulu Masen and Leuser Ecosystems • IPCC carbon stock estimates • Spatial analysis & forest type stratification • Indicative historical deforestation rates • Training of GoA REDD Taskforce field teams • Implementation of carbon stock surveys (March 2010)

Community Engagement • GoA REDD Taskforce Community Working Group established March 2010 • Initiated free, prior and informed consent process with local communities • Feedback and complaints hotline established • Information and education materials/visuals developed • Community social baseline assessment

  9. Closing Remarks • Aceh is taking concrete steps to develop a Provincial level baseline • Aceh supports the development of a GCF protocol built on existing best-practice REDD standards
