  3. In Tennessee, a family is defined as two or more people who reside together who are related by birth, marriage, or adoption.

  4. In Asia and Africa, some marriages are arranged by parents. Why would a parent do this?

  5. Due to the lack of housing and natural resources, many married couples in Asia and Africa live with the groom’s parents and take care of the parents until they pass away.

  6. A joint family is many kinfolk under the same roof. In the early 1800s, most people were farmers; therefore, they had large families to help plant, work, and harvest the crops.

  7. In early American farming communities, there were defined duties: Men- clearing the land, cultivating the fields, & looking after the livestock Women- prepare meals, care for the house, & raise the children

  8. During the industrialization of America, young women began to work in factories and strike out on their own. Jane Addams founded the Hull House to help immigrant families The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote

  9. In recent times, families have become blended, a family formed by the remarriage of a divorced or widowed parent. It includes the new husband and wife, plus some or all of their children from previous marriages.
