Bindyarani Devi an Indian weightlifter has written her name in the history of Indian sports after bagging a first-ever medal at IWF World Cup 2024. With the winning of a bronze medal, Bindrayani Devi became the first Indian who managed to secure a medal at the IWF Weightlifting World Cup in the women’s 55kg event. Her prowess and performance made everyone her fan and brought her into the limelight. It is worth noting that she secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and delivered a commendable performance despite competing in a non-Olympic weight class. With her sterling exceptional performance, she secured third place in standing and made India proud with a bronze medal. The gold medal was bagged by Kang Hyon Gyong who represented the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. She secured first place after lifting an extraordinary total of 234kg (103 kg snatch + 131 kg clean and jerk). The silver medal came into the hands of Mihaela Cambei who represented Romania at the event. She lifted a total of 201kg (comprising 91 kg snatch + 110 kg clean and jerk.) Speaking about the performance of 25-year-old, Bindyarani Devi, she failed in her first attempt in the 83 kg snatch but she bounced back in her second try and appeared as the winner. However, her ensuing attempt to lift 86 kg was not successful. The weightlifting champion redeemed herself in the clean-and-jerk event. In this event, she successfully lifted 110 kg without any hurdles in the first attempt before improving it to 113kg in the second round. The Manipuri lifter also secured the silver medal in the clean and jerk section for her 113kg lift. In competitions such as the Continental Championships, IWF World Cup, and World Championships, medals are presented for both clean, snatch and jerk and for total lifts. At present, the 25-year-old In the women’s 59kg Olympic Qualification Ranking, Bindyarani Devi achieved the 29th spot. Besides that, on Monday, 1 April 2024, Mirabai Chanu represented India in Phuket and secured the 12th position in the women’s 49kg category. With her present 2nd overall ranking, she is confident to ensure a quota for India at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Mirabai Chanu and Bindyarani Devi were the only representatives of India who participated in the IWF World Cup 2024. The event will come to an end on 11th April.
