  3. Rene’ Descartes (1596-1650) • Born in France • Traveled around Europe • He applied mathematics and logic to understanding the natural world • Famous quote “I think, therefore I am”-meaning he only knew he existed because he knew he was thinking

  4. Isaac Newton (1642-1727) • Developed the laws of gravity and motion • Defined the scientific method • Showed it was possible to use scientific reasoning to explain how things work

  5. Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) • Was born in London • Traveled around Europe to meet with scientists and to study different forms of government • 1651 wrote his most famous work Leviathan. • Argued that people were naturally wicked and could not be trusted to govern. • Believed that an absolute monarchy - a government that gave all power to a king or queen - was best

John Locke (1632-1704) • Born in England • Was a political philosopher • Wrote the Essay Concerning Human Understanding and other writings on government • Thought humans were a blank slate when they were born and were shaped by their experiences • Believed government should protect people’s natural rights • If government fails the people should overthrow the government • Thomas Jefferson used his words to write the Declaration of Independence

  7. Baron de Montesquieu (1689-1755) • Born in France • Believed in separation of powers: not letting all the power go to one group or person in government • Thought this would protect citizens • Wrote Spirit of Law’s • Writers of the U.S. constitution used his ideas
