WWI Casualties • The total number of casualties in WWI, both military and civilian, was about 37 million. • There were 16 million deaths and 21 million wounded. • The total number of deaths includes 9.7 million military personnel and about 6.8 million civilians. • The largest number of deaths were combat related.

  3. Most Deadly War • WWI was more deadly than any other war preceding it, because of technological advancements. • Machine guns • Poisonous gas • Combat aircraft • Tanks • grenades

  4. Two Front War The war was fought along two fronts: Western and Eastern. German and Austrian forces fought the French and British on the Western Front. German and Austrian forces fought the Russians on their Eastern Front.

  5. Trench Warfare • Soldiers used shovels to dig 25,000 miles of defensive trenches to stay below the line of fire. • Suicidal charges across no man’s land were used to attack the enemies lines. • These tactics led to the slaughter of millions of soldiers as they were mowed down by machine gun and artillery fire.

  6. No Man’s Land It was the area in between trenches of opposing sides. It was booby trapped. When one side tried to charge another’s trenches, it was a suicide mission.

  7. Battle of Verdun One of the longest battles and most devastating battles in human history (Feb. – Dec., 1916). Over 250, 000 lives were lost in a fairly even spilt between German and French Forces on the Western Front. German forces tried to take the French city of Verdun but failed. The battle illustrates the gross destructiveness of modern warfare.
