  2. EEO • Equal Employment Opportunity is the concept that individuals should have equal treatment in all employment related actions • One duty: analyze quarterly EEO statistical reports of DENR employees who are new hires, promoted, etc. and compare with agency EEO Plan

  3. Unlawful Workplace Harassment Defined Unwelcome or unsolicited speech or conduct based upon race, sex, creed, religion, national origin, age, color, or disability, as defined by G.S. 168A-3 that creates a hostile work environment or circumstances involving quid pro quo (this for that). DENR Central HR Employee Relations and EEO Officer • Investigate documented complains • Consult with management, employees on procedures, rights, etc. • Hostile workplace environment—agency grievance procedure • Discrimination—EEOC, Office of Admin. Hearings, and State Personnel Commission • Conduct training to prevent Workplace Harassment • Issue annual incident report

  4. Anti-discrimination Laws • Age Discrimination inEmployment Act—age 40 and over • Title VII, Civil Rights Law of 1964 — race, color, sex, religion and national origin • Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act—disability • Environmental Justice

  5. Protection: attitudes and behaviors In July 2007, the State Personnel Commission added sexual orientation and political affiliation to its list of protected classes.

  6. REACH Intern Program • Paid summer interns • Fall and spring interns, academic credit • Diverse group

  7. Engineers, Environmentalists & Managers in Training Intern Program • Being organized • Select college graduates for 12-18 month tenure in permanent positions funded by HR and assigned to divisions • Hard to recruit job categories • Following internship, transition into similar or same position on permanent basis
