  1. Subject-Verb Agreement Pre-Test Directions: Write the main word or words from the subject of each sentence. Then write the correct verb form from the choice in parenthesis. • The barges on the canal (transport, transports) wheat. • The headlights of the oncoming cars (dazzle, dazzles) a driver at night. • The vase of flowers (make, makes) a lovely display. • The thunder (sound, sounds) like fireworks • Either the Andersons’ children or their dog (has, have) dug this hole.

  2. Subject-Verb Agreement • Number refers to the form of a word that indicates whether it is singular or plural. A singular subject indicates one and requires a singular verb. Plural subjects indicate more than one and require plural verbs. With most regular verbs, add –s or –esto form the singular. Examples: Singular Plural The athlete exercises. The athletes exercise.

  3. Subject-Verb Agreement • An exception to the rule occurs with the pronouns I and you. Both require the form of a verb without –s or –es, even when you refers to one person. The only exception is be – when I is the subject, the verb form is am. Example I love animals. You are my best friend.

  4. Subject-Verb Agreement • Whether functioning as main verbs or auxiliary verbs, be, have, and do change in form to show agreement. Examples Singular Plural I am happy. We are happy. The dog has food. The dogs have food. I do trust you. He does trust you.

  5. Subject-Verb Agreement • When be, have, and do are used as auxiliary verbs, they indicate the number of a verb phrase. Notice that the following main verbs do not change form. Examples Singular Plural He has seen the movie. They have seen the movie. She is going to work. They are going to work. Does she stay here? Do they stay here?

  6. Subject-Verb Agreement • Note that were is plural except in two cases: first, when its subject is the second-person singular personal pronoun, you; and second, when it is the verb in a statement that is contrary to fact. Examples You were the skateboard king. (singular subject) If I were the lottery winner, I would buy you that car. (the subordinate clause containing were is contrary to fact.)

  7. Subject-Verb Agreement Practice Write the correct verb from the choices in parentheses. • Lonnie, you (is, are) my very best friend. • I (am, are) only one voice among billions. • We (attends, attend) class regularly. • These cherries (is, are) delicious. • Reynaldo (has, have) seen this week’s hit movie. • The girls’ softball team (has, have) won all its games. • You (is, are) nervous, of course, but you will do well. • Freighters still (carries, carry) Midwestern grain. • (Does, Do) the nurses take breaks on schedule? • My cats (watches, watch) the birds for hours.
