Accident prevention boils down to basic activities :

Reducing unsafe condition.

Reducing unsafe act.


How to prevent accident

  • In large facilities ,the chief safety officer called “Environmental Health and safety officer" is responsible for this . In smaller firms various other managers including those from human resources, planet management and first line manager share these responsibilities.

  • Reducing unsafe conditions is always an employer’s first line of defense in accident prevention.
  • Safety engineer should design jobs so as to remove or reduce physical conditions.
  • Employers increasingly use computerized tools to design safer equipment.e.g designsafe help automate the tasks of hazard analysis ,risk assessment ,and identifying safety option.

  • Sometimes the solution for for eliminating an unsafe condition is obvious, and sometimes its more subtle e.g. slips and falls are often the result of debris or a slippery floor . Relatively obvious remedies for problems like these include slip reducing floor coatings ,floor mats, better lighting and a system to quick block of spills.


Personal protective equipment

  • Getting to wear personal protective equipment can be famously difficult chore .
  • Where ability is important.
  • In addition to providing reliable protection and durability ,protective gear should fit properly;be easy as care for ,maintain, and repair ;be flexible and lightweight; provide comfort and reduce heat stress; be relatively easy to put on and take off ; and easy to clean ,dispose of , and recycle .


Reducing unsafe Acts by Emphasizing safety

  • Praise employees when they choose safe behavior .
  • Listen when employees offer safety suggestion , concerns or complaints;
  • Be a good example, for instance by following every safety rule and procedure.
  • Visit plants area regularly
  • Links managers bonuses to safety improvements.


Reducing Unsafe Acts THrough Selection and placement

  • Proper employees screening and placement can reduce unsafe acts,
  • Here the employees aims is to identify the trait that might predict accidents on the job in the question and screen candidate for this traits .

For example
  • A test like the Employee Reliability Inventory (ERI) can help employers reduce unsafe acts at works .
  • Also ask several safety releated question during the selection interview for instance “what would you do if you saw another employee working in an unsafe ways .


Reducing Unsafe Acts Through Training

  • Safety training is another way to reduce unsafe acts ,especially for new employees.
  • You should instruct them in safe practices and procedures, warn them of potent ional hazards, and work on developing a safety conscious attitude.

OSHA has published two useful booklets .
  • “Training Requirements Under OSHA “and “Teaching Safety and Health in the

  • Employers also use various tools to motivate workers to work safety .
  • Safety posters are one.
  • Safety posters can apparently increase safe behavior but they are no substitute for a comprehensive safety program .
  • Incentive programs are also successful at reducing workplace injuries .


Use Behaviour Based Safety

  • Behavior based safety means Identifying the worker behaviors that contribute to accidents and then training workers to avoid these behavior .


Use Employee Participation

  • There are good reasons to get the employee involved in designing the safety program.
  • First ,employee are often management ‘s best source of idea about what the potential problems are and problems are and how to solve them.
  • Second employee involvements tend to encourage employee to accept the safety program.


Problems and demedies

  • Chemicals and others hazardous material.
  • Excessive noise and vibrations.
  • Temperature extremes.
  • Biohazards including those that are normally occurring and man made .
  • Ergonomic hazard such as poorly designed equipment that force worker to do their jobs while contorted in unnatural position .


Material Safety Data Sheet

  • Sheets that describe he precautions required by OSHA that employee are to take when dealing with hazardous chemicals and what to do if problem arise .


INfectious diseases

  • Employees can take steps to prevent the entry or spread of infectious diseases like these into workforce . These include:
  • Closely monitor Center for diseases Control travel alert .These CDC issues travel advisories and travel alerts.
  • Provide daily medical screenings for employees returning from SARS or other infected areas.
  • Clean works area and surface regularly.
  • Stagger breaks . Offer several lunch periods to reduce overcrowding .


Computer Related Health problems

  • NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health ) provided general recommendations regarding rhe use of computer screens . These include:
  • Give employee rest breaks.
  • Employees should take a 3_5minutes break from working at the computer every 20_40 minutes and use other tasks like making copies .

Put the fleet flat on the floor ,or on a footrest .
  • Lets the wrists rest lightly on apad for support .
  • Allow the user to position his or her wrists at the same level as the elbow .
  • Reduce glare with devices such as shades over windows and recessed or indirect lighting .


Workplace Smoking

  • Smoking is serious problem for both employee and employer.
  • For employers these costs derive from higher health and fire insurance as well as increase absenteeism and reduced productivity ( which occurs when smoker takes a 10 _minutes break behind the store)


what you can and cannot do

  • Can the employer institute a smoking ban.
  • The depend on several things , including the state in which you are located and weather or not your firm is unionized. for example instituting a smoking ban in a unionized facility which formerly allowed employee to smoke may be subject collective bargaining .


Improve Employee Screening

  • An unexplained gap in employment .
  • A negative ,unfavorable, or false reference .
  • Incomplete or false information on the resume or application.
  • A history of significant psychiatric problem.
  • Prior in subordinate or violent behavior on the job.

a history of drug or alcohol abuse .
  • A criminal history involving harassing or violent behavior.
  • Lapsed or lost license or accreditations.


Dealing with angry Employee

  • Some suggestions
  • Make eye contact .
  • Stop what are you doing and give full attention .
  • Speak in calm voice and create a relax environment.
  • Be open and honest.
  • Let the person have his or her say.
  • BE careful to define problem.
  • Ask open-ended question and explore all sides of the issues


Natural security

  • Taking advantage of the facility’s natural or architectural features in order to minimize security problems.


Mechanical security

  • The utilization of security of security system such as locks, intrusion alarms, access control system and surveillance system
