  3. Introduction Surgery can be fear and anxiety-provoking for both people and pets. For some dogs recovering can be tedious, for some painful, and for some simple process, which is also depending on which type of surgery too. However, for the first few weeks after surgery dog will likely require some special care. If you want to help your dog recover quickly, easily, and effectively, follow these easy tips mentioned below.

  4. Keep Dog Stay Warm You want to help your dog maintain the perfect temperature, especially since the effects of anesthesia can affect your dog's ability to regulate temperature. For the first couple of days your pup likely won't know if it's hot or cold, so be mindful of his temperature and help keep him warm. And also keep your dog on the floor rather than in high places such as beds, furniture, or stairs as they might fall over.

  5. Regular Wound Care Either you or your veterinarian should regularly clean your dog's wounds and replace bandages to help it heal faster and reduce the risk of infections. Ideally, your vet will instruct you on proper wound care, maybe recommending changing bandages 2 or 3 times per day in the beginning. And you'll be able to check the bandages every couple of days, but follow your vet's instructions.

  6. Fresh Air Even on the day of the surgery, you want to take your dog outside every few hours. IV fluids delivered during the surgery will mean your dog is more likely to need to urinate. Without regular trips outside to relieve himself, your dog may have accidents indoors, even during sleep.

  7. Plenty of Water It is important to keep your dog hydrated after surgery, even if she doesn't seem thirsty. Monitor your dog's drinking after surgery to ensure she is getting enough fluids. Also offer small amounts of food; except in cases of food intolerances, experts recommend something bland like chicken or hamburger meat but no treats.

  8. Some Isolation is Beneficial It is important to keep your dog hydrated after surgery, even if she doesn't seem thirsty. Monitor your dog's drinking after surgery to ensure she is getting enough fluids. Also offer small amounts of food; except in cases of food intolerances, experts recommend something bland like chicken or hamburger meat but no treats.
