  2. What are Wikis? • Web 2.0 software that facilitates using the internet • Free, online writing spaces that use SIMPLE formatting rules to make it easy to add, delete or edit information • Published online similar to a webpage

  3. Characteristics of Wikis • Main difference from other web based forums is the ability for multiple people to contribute and edit the content • Always in the process of being edited and expanded

Wiki vs. Blog Wiki Blog • Articles • Easier collaboration • Communicate with students, parents or other teachers • Share notes, homework, websites, or other important information • Have multiple pages to present information on different topics • Both are a way to share information and ideas in a collaborative manner • Entries • Way to express opinion on topics • Share information through your profile and talk about hot topics

How Can Teachers Use Wikis? • Provide a space for free writing • Debate course topics • Share resources, such as websites/ annotated bibliographies • Maintain a journal of work performed on group projects • Use to share information such as class notes, homework or other announcements • Google “teacher uses of wikis” for a ton of other ideas!

One Way to Get Started • www.wikispaces/site/for/teachers.com • Wikispaces offers access to free wiki pages for educators. • Positives- easy formatting, great tech support, effective way to organize classroom information • Negatives- ads unless you pay $5 monthly fee, doesn’t like rows of information, free version is limited in design options • www.wetpaint.com offers ad free educator wiki access

  7. Step by Step • Log on to the wikispaces site • Register as a user and request educator account • Once registered, follow the process to start new wiki 4. Tutorials on the wikispaces homepage are very user-friendly to help you begin the set up of your page
