  1. Timeline of U.S. Intervention of Latin America By:Emily Turner

  2. 1820-1853 • 1823- The Monroe Doctrine warns against recolonization of newly independent Latin Americans Republicans. • 1835-45- Settlers in Texas revolt against Mexico and joins the United States. • 1853- The Gadsden Purchase from Mexico, U.S. acquired the railroad through Arizona and New Mexico. • 1854- Ostend Manifesto told the U.S. to aquire Cuba even if we have to force them.

  3. 1855-1898 • 1855- William Walker invades Nicaragua and declares himself president, he ruled for two years. U.S. sent in Uruguay to protect American lives. • 1857- Corneilus Vanderbilt funds the war against Walker and hired Sylvanus Spencer to lead the Costa Rican forces. • 1865- U.S. mobilizes troops along the Mexican border • 1895-the U.S. sends the USS Wachusett to Guatemala to defend North American lives. • 1898- U.S. intervention into the Spanish American War.

  4. 1901-1912 • 1901- Platt Amendment to Cuba’s new constitution gives the U.S. the rights to its political affairs. • 1903- Teddy Roosevelt intervenes Panama’s independence from Colombia. • 1904-1905- Teddy’s Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine declares the U.S. to be the watchman of the Dominican Republican. U.S. Marines land in Honduras. • 1906-09-The Platt Amendment, U.S. forces Cuba and economic development. • 1909-12- Taft and his “Dollar Diplomacy”.

  5. 1912-24 • 1912- United Fruit Company forces throughout Central America. • 1912- U.S. invades Nicaragua. • 1914- Panama Canal open. Marines occupy Vera Cruz, Mexico. • 1923- SOS Charles Evans Hughes renounces the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. • 1915-24- Marines intervene in Haiti, and occupy Dominican Republic.

  6. 1920’s, 1930’s,1940’s,1950’s • 1926-33- Marines occupy Nicaragua and fights to help against Sandino. • 1938- Lazaro Cardenas nationalizes the oil in Mexico, including U.S. holding. • 1945- Cold War drives Latin American policy. • 1954-CIA overthrows JacoboArbenz in Guatemala.

  7. 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s,1990’s • 1959- Fulgencio Batista flees Castro’s revolution. • 1960- CIA plans to assassinate Castro entitiled. “Operation Mongoose.” • 1961- Eisenhower breaks ties with Castro and Cuba. • 1962-Cuban Missile Crisis. • 1970-US overthrew socialist government of Salvador Allende in Chile • 1977-80- President Jimmy Carter makes human rights his goal in the Latin American Policy. • 1983-Reagan orders US forces to invade the island of Grenada to halt Cuban work on an airstrip. • 1989- End of Cold War

  8. 1980’s, 1990’s, 2000’s • 1993- U.S., Mexico, and Canada form NAFTA • 1990’s- high levels of drug trafficking, debt, illegal immigration to the U.S • 1997- Bill Clinton visits South American and speaks of free trade. • 2001-Economic collapse in Argentina, U.S. drifts in Latin America.
