Stuxnet makes it possible Gregory Burroughs Aric Ahmed MIS 2101 Project 3 April 26, 2011
What is Stuxnet? • Stuxnet is a very sophisticated piece of malware that seems to be designed to target and infiltrate industrial supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software used to run factories and chemical plants as well as electric power plants and transmission systems worldwide.
What does it do? • It disrupts, destroys, and disables real world targets such as key infrastructure systems. • Example: Iran’s uranium enrichment plant.
Why do we think it was constructed? They didn’t want him to get the Bomb! President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
What are the benefits of Stuxnet • Undesired foreign projects can be disrupted with out the use of troops or ordinance • Stuxnet can be reengineered to do new innovative things • Govt. and private entities can strengthen their networks from malicious cyber attacks
What are the hazards of Stuxnet • Stuxnet had a valid certificate stolen from Realtek • If we can shut down them they can shut down us • Reengineered, enemies can use stuxnet to target federal govt’s, nuclear power plants, ATC/FAA, banks, etc. • Website certificates can not be trusted now
Where did it likely come from? • Stuxnet is likely derived from a national Government • One with significant resources and capabilities in the area of cyber warfare • Who has the most interest in seeing Iran’s nuclear ambitions halted?......

Conclusion The creation of Stuxnet was very innovative and designed like the world has never seen. It has opened up a new avenue for the world to explore. What the future holds as a result of Stuxnet, only time will tell.
