  1. PSYCHOKINETIC AEOLIAN ENERGY WILD-GENERATORS AND US PENELOPE KOUKOURAKI TEACHER OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION SPECIAL HIGH SCHOOL OF HERAKLION Penelope Kou@yahoo.gr

  2. AEOLIAN ENERGY Wind-generators and us General aim: Initiation into ecological subjects through the method of co-learning which derives from co-action, and the development of conceptual abilities in children through bodily shape, on a dance level, and to self-activate kinetically, slowly or at speed according to acoustic conception. Particular aims: Information-Sensitization-Courses of Action. In order to exploit our particular aims we began to collect information about Aeolian energy and Aeolian parks.

  3. A. Aeolian energy: “Aeolian”, is derived from the God Aeolus who was the “administrator” of the winds. Aeolus: The Ancient Greeks believed that he governed the winds. They did not consider him a god and for that reason they did not build temples to him, nor offer up sacrifices to him. Zeus, it is said, appointed him king, governor and treasurer of the winds. B. Who was Aeolus? He was the son of Hippotes. His kingdom was above the island of Aeolia, modern-day Tinos on a mountain known as Tsikina. At its feet lies Livada, a beach of untamed beauty, full of strange, smooth, gigantic stones of which it is said that Aeolus ‘carved the rocks of Livada’. Με τη σμίλη του Αιόλου

  4. Aeolus lived there with his wife Amphithea, their six sons and five daughters, who were all married to each other. Their life was spent in celebrations and gatherings, always accompanied by the music of the winds, which blew at times wildly and strong, and at other times calmly and soothingly. Aeolus arranged how the winds would blow. The Romans considered Aeolus a god. Homer named him, Aeolus Hippotades, and in the “Odyssey” he mentions that Ulysses was hosted at his palace during his return to Ithaka. Aeolus, in order to help him, gathered up all the winds in a flask, which he gave to Ulysses. In this way, the journey to Ithaka would be calm, without rough seas and storms. Ulysses’ comrades opened the flask out of curiosity and the winds were unloosed on the sea causing terrifyingly high seas. Recommendation: Consolidation of the myths with theatrical games. C. What is Aeolian energy? The wind, as man ascertained from ancient times, was a very great source of energy, the exploitation of which could offer significant solutions to the covering of his energy needs in an economical and environmentally friendly way. Throughout the duration of history, man has exploited and still exploits the wind. More than 5000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians used the power of the wind to sail their ships on the Nile. Later, windmills were built on the peaks of hills and mountains, open plains, shores and mountain passes which channeled the air, and were used to grind corn or to pump water for irrigation. The windmills in Holland aided its economic development, while on the Lassithi Plain of Crete, there were so many windmills that they made the area the first and largest “Aeolian park” in the world.

  5. The power of the wind, or Aeolian energy (Aeolus was the “administrator” of the winds according to the Ancient Greeks), is being developed today more and more in areas where strong winds often blow, to produce electricity. Aeolian energy is, essentially, the kinetic energy of the wind, whose original source is the sun. The sun, in warming the air masses, causes them to move upwards while their place is taken by other, cooler masses. In this way, by the movement of air masses, the wind is created. Today, we use wind-generators similar to windmills placed in the same areas where windmills were once situated, for the exploitation of Aeolian energy. Wind-generators transform the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity.

  6. The first thing we notice about a wind-generator is its fins, which rotate when the wind blows. This movement of the fins is transmitted to a rotating axle, which, due to a homing system, is always found to be parallel to the direction of the wind. The kinetic energy of the rotating axle is transformed by a generator into electrical power. This whole system is placed at the top of a tall tower. The most important application of wind-generators is the production of electrical energy, which is channeled, in turn, to the electrical power-grid of the country. Many wind-generators together form the so-called Aeolian Parks. In Crete there are already 10 large Aeolian parks, mainly around the area of Sitia. Today, Crete is the island with the most wind-generators in Europe. Conclusion:

  7. Aeolian energy is inexhaustible, renewable, as the sun will always ensure that there are temperature variations between areas of earth such that winds will be caused, clean and environmentally friendly, as its transformation into electrical energy does not burden it. D. Courses of Action Immediately after being informed about Aeolian energy and Aeolian parks, we decided to visit the nearest park to Heraklion, which is the Aeolian park of Megali Vrisi, a complete production unit consisting of 9 wind-generators.

  8. At the Aeolian park we had to: • 1.Count the wind-generators • 2.Photograph particular sections of the wind-generators • 3.To record our visit on video-cassette • 4.To write a composition about our impressions of the Aeolian park. • 5. Theatrical game “Wind-generators and Us”. Photographs from the Aeolian park of Megali Vrisi.

  9. PSYCHOKINETIC:WIND-GENERATORS AND US • Introduction • Α) Blackout • Β) Introduction of wind instruments • C) Pitures of wind-generators with slides or video projector D) We stop the music and turn off the projector

  10. 2: Theatrical game Α. Body shapes • The entrance of stimulator by blowing the wind instrument • The children are free in their own space • The stimulator says: look for the wind generators • They are up in the mountain. • On the top of the mountain the winds blows stronger • Climb up. • Look for. • Listen to the sound of the wind turbines 4. Then we turn on the projector Bravo, we have found the wind turbines. Good work Αa) Closed body shapes: Tower of the wind turbine (close skills) • Imagine you are a tower • You are screwed to the foundation of the tower • You are screwed with 80 screws. Each screw is 1.60m

  11. 2. Become a screw. Screw the tower to the foundation Stop screwing when you feel steady 3. Now you are a steel tower that weighs 40 tons

  12. 4. Feel its weight. I will check how steady your tower is. At the top of the tower there is a turbine. Inside the turbine there is a generator Closed body shape (generator) (Closed skill) • You are a turbine • The turbine makes noise • Become one thing, feel its weight. • The turbine and the generator weigh in total 25 tons.

  13. Αb)opened body shapes • Three blades are adjusted inside the generator • The blades are a bit more than 20m long • Feel their length. Β. Slow-Fast You hear the wind istrument. The sound of the wind instrument is the wind. The stimulator blows slowly in the beginning.

  14. Slow 1. Turn the blades according to the wind direction They stop completely 2. The stimulator starts blowing stronger and stronger. The children follow at the same pace

  15. Fast 3. The wind gradually gets stronger and stronger. The children follow at the same pace again. Fast-Stop-Slow • The stimulator now blows fast, stop, slowly, stop. • The children follow.

  16. C. A three dimensional space with acoustic conception Introduction: We use colourful ribbons 1. Take the ribbons 2. Run freely in the space so as the ribbons work as blades

  17. 3. Place the ribbons next to your feet 4. Become a tower

  18. C1. Lower level-acoustic cpnception (drum) A soon as you hear the sound of the drum the blade will rotate at its lowest speed.

  19. You are the tower • Imagine that the blades are going to be installed on you. • The blade is at the base of the tower. • As soon as you hear the sound of the drum make your blade turn at the lowest level of the tower. • As you hear the sound of the drum the blade rotates around its base. C2. Middel level (Ntefi) • As soon as you hear the sound of ntefi turn the blade at its middle level. • It should be turned in your middle line.

  20. C3. High level (Maraka) • A soon as you hear the sound of maraka the blade is rotated at its highest level. • Good work, keep it high. 2. The wind is getting stronger (as the sound of maraka is getting faster) Take advantage of it in order to get lots of enrgy. The sound of maraka is at its highest peak. Storm is coming. It is raining.

  21. The wind generators will not stop. It has lots of energy. All of a sudden a loud noise is heard. (The drum is loud). The thunderbolts strike the wind generators. Bad luck.

  22. The blades stopped. The towers are falling down. The wind turbines fell next to each other

  23. DKinetic team improvising The wind generators fell down due to the thunderbolt. However, they still have energy the one they had stored. Come children feel your energy and become a huge wind generator at a low level. Three of you will become the blades. The first three who manage to get the ribbons, will be blades. The rest will become a tower. Strong tower.

  24. The ribbons are moving to show that the wind blows. Conclusion: If we stick together we can achieve everything in life. We have a lot of energy inside us as long as we know how to take advantage of it.

  25. As the old man walked the beach at dawn, he noticed a young man ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Finally catching up with the youth, he asked him why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun. “But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish”, countered the other. “How can you effort make any difference?” The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it to safety in the waves. “It makes a difference to this one”, he said. --Anonymous

  26. My name is Tim Fredericks. I am disabled because I have Dawn syndrome. Down syndrome people have an extra chromosome, but nobody knows why. Most people have 46 chromosomes. I have 47. Would anyone like my extra chromosome? I would be glad to give it away. John Dunn asked me to share a few words about physical education, or PE as I call it. I like PE more than any other subject in school. Reading and writing were hard, but PE was fun and I learned a lot. PE is good for the disabled. It makes them sharper,-their arms, their legs, their stomachs, their eyes, and their brains. In addition, it taches them sports they can use when they graduate. Everyone with disabilities should have a good PE program. Tim Fredericks
