  1. Welcome to Algebra 1 Ms. Lundblad Room 410 tracylundblad@losal.org

  2. Around the room… • Date • Homework • Computers • Algebra Bookcase • Trash • Tissue • Hole punch

  3. New: • Ch. 9 Homework Stamp Log • Checklist for Success (Bathroom passes) • Course Outline (if you’re new to my class) • This is also on the class website • Losal.org/lahs • “Teachers” • “Lundblad, T” • “Algebra 1 Course Handouts”

  4. 9-5 Adding/Subtracting Polynomials Objective: To add and subtract polynomials. Standard 10.0

  5. What does each prefix mean? mono one bi two tri three

  6. What about poly? one or more A polynomial is a monomial or a sum/difference of monomials. A monomial is a number, a variable, or a product of a number and one or more variables Important Note!! An expression is not a polynomial if there is a variable in the denominator.

  7. State whether each expression is a polynomial. If it is, identify it. 1) 7y - 3x + 4 trinomial 2) 10x3yz2 monomial 3) not a polynomial

  8. ADDING: (4X2 + 5X – 1) + (6X2 – 3X – 4) Method 1: Combine Like Terms Method 2: Like Elimination 4x2 + 5x – 1 + 6x2 – 3x – 4 10x2 + 2x – 5 4x2 + 5x – 1 + 6x2 – 3x – 4 10x2 + 2x – 5

  9. TOO • (6x2y – xy2 + 7) + (-7x2y – 6xy2 – 5) -x2y – 7xy2 + 2 • (x + 6y – 3) + (10y – 3x + 1) -2x + 16y – 2 • (7x2 + 5x) + (6 – x) 7x2 + 4x + 6 Method 2: Make sure to line up like terms Write answer in alphabetical/descending order

  10. SUBTRACTION:(X2 – 6X + 5) – (3X2 – 5X + 6)**DISTRIBUTE NEGATIVE TO 2ND POLYNOMIAL Method 1 Method 2 x2 – 6x + 5 – 3x2+ 5x – 6 -2x2 – x – 1 x2 – 6x + 5 + -3x2+ 5x – 6 -2x2 – x – 1

  11. TOO – volunteers to board (6x – xy + 2y) – (-x + 3xy + 5y) (10x2 + 2x + 6) – (6x – 2x2 + 4) (6x – 2) – (10 + 2y)

  12. Find the sum or difference.(5a – 3b) + (2a + 6b) 3a – 9b 3a + 3b 7a + 3b 7a – 3b

  13. Find the sum or difference.(5a – 3b) – (2a + 6b) 3a – 9b 3a + 3b 7a + 3b 7a – 9b

  14. Homework • Pg. 525 #21 – 35 odd

  15. Polynomial Vocabulary Chart • Let’s do this together  • If you have your book.. Please get it out now.
