  1. Rhetorical Analysis: “Do I look Illegal?” Group Testosterone: Mario Luja, Eduardo Macarena, Daniel Vasquez, Ramiro Molina

  2. Interactivity Is this video relevant today? Does it still happen in everyday life?

  3. Who is the author or organization that made the video? The author of this PSA is currently unknown but the production team in charge of the film is EKG Films.

  4. What motivated the author(s) to create this video? The main motive that led to the creation of the video was due to the passing of Arizona’s SB1070 bill, making it legal for an police officer to racially profile citizens of Arizona to check if they were “legal”. The purpose of making this video was to show that anybody that didn’t fit their profile, could be illegal even if they weren’t.

  5. What motivated the author(s) to create this video?

  6. What might be the author(s) purpose? Persuade readers to support repealing the discriminating law since the law only applies to those with darker skin color as well as ethnicity.

  7. ~ Who is the audience? How do you know? Who or what groups of people are probably not the audience? We believe that the main audience is voting citizens in Arizona because that’s where the law is being considered. The audience is targeted at political activists, and coalitions such as CHIRLA, and the NNIRR (National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights)

  8. What is the larger conversation? In other words, what in our society, culture, or community might have prompted the author(s) to create this video? The larger conversation would be Americans questioning the law. They will question what is happening with the justice system and the rights of other citizens in other states. This video was prompted by the fight for equality.

  9. What is the main claim or argument? The main claim of this video is to stop the dehumanizing threats made by Arizona’s immigrant laws. Along with that, the main claim of this video is to the Arizona’s immigration law violates the Fourth Amendment.

  10. *Pathos -Pathos is used in that it appeals to the emotions of the viewer. -The video shows humans being labeled. No one wants to feel labeled especially in a negative way because of the color of their skin or ethnicity. -This puts the viewer into the position that the people in the videos are in which appeals to our emotions.

  11. Pathos cont. In the video, they appeal to the audience’s logic by having each person hold up a small sign with a simple question: Do I look illegal? By doing this, the organization showed the audience that legal authorities can’t just simply judge a book by it’s cover since they don’t know who is illegal in the video unless the people tell them.

  12. Logos -the audience can see that discriminative law is violation of the fourth amendment, which states no unreasonable searches and seizures. -in the video it states that “Immigration law SB 1070 will lead to legal profiling” and “Legal profiling= legal discrimination”

  13. Ethos -I believe the piece is credible. EKG films is a company that makes videos professionally. They have other PSAs as well. -the other company involved, Afrotaino Productions is concerned with the Latin arts and supports this video’s message. -Their are also real people in this video which makes it credible as well. They didn’t get celebrities and put them in front of the camera to speak about a cause.

  14. How would you characterize the style and tone? Is the style formal, informal, satirical, or something else? Would the target audience find this style appealing, welcoming, or inviting? Or does the style offend the audience in some way? The style of presentation used in the video is that of a public service announcement, meant to inform an activist community to vote against the Arizona SB 1070 bill. The style is appealing because of the questions it asks in the video.

  15. Does the author(s) use rhetoric to effectively communicate a message to his/her intended audience? To communicate effectively, rhetoric is used to persuade the viewers in an artistic and persuading form. The video focuses on different races of people holding signs, and portrays them artistically. This public service announcement is meant to cause thought provoking themes in order to convince the audience that the SB 1070 is discriminating.

  16. What, if anything, has the group learned about rhetoric by completing this project? Our group has learned several new concepts: -finding the purpose of a video -analyzing what components make a video grab a viewer’s attention -analyzing how the viewer interprets a piece -successful ways in which to persuade an audience
