  5. Options Cont… Nearly 2.5 million students graduating from CA high schools and Community Colleges… …With 220 Universities to consider in their home state

  6. Options Cont… • Out-of-State =3400 Colleges • Sizes (ranges) • Different locations • Admit rates • Costs • Increase search = find match

  7. Cost • Average annual UC Cost = $36,000 • Average annual CSU Cost = $24,000 • Private School Costs = $25,000-$60,000 • Scholarships • Diversity – all types • Graduation rate, impacted? (impaction is a foreign concept to out of state schools)

  8. Cost • Tuition and Fees • Housing and Dining (aka. “room and board”) • Books • Transportation • Spending money

  9. Cost (Western Undergraduate Exchange) • WUE is a regional tuition reciprocity agreement. • No money is exchanged between states. The student pays reduced tuition directly to the enrolling institution. • WUE makes out-of-state study AFFORDABLE! • It’s a multilateral exchange; no “balance” between states is required. • Students pay 150% resident tuition instead of nonresident tuition • 148 public 2 & 4 year institutions participate in the WUE network • In AY 2010, 26,711 students enrolled through WUE and saved ~ $210.8 M in tuition • Participating States: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming

  10. WUE Enrollment, Fall 2010: 26,711

  11. Cost Cont. (Western Undergraduate Exchange) Western Undergraduate Exchange Qualification & Eligibility: Degree Program- Some institutions have opened their entire curriculum on a space-available or first-come, first-serve basis; others offer only designated programs at the reduced WUE rate. Academic Qualification- Colleges and universities have additional criteria such as ACT/SAT test scores or high school GPA. WICHE does not set qualification criteria for WUE applicants. *WUE is not automatically awarded to all eligible candidates

  12. Cost Cont. (Western Undergraduate Exchange) • WUE institutions’ profiles are listed at www.wiche.edu/wue and include: • Majors available at the WUE rate (can be restricted) • WUE application deadlines (they vary by institution) • WUE academic qualifications (GPA, ACT/SAT, etc.) • Campus WUE contact (admissions, financial aid or scholarship office; it varies) • Only public institutions participate • No community colleges in CA or HI participate

  13. Cost Cont (Western Undergraduate Exchange).. WUE is for a max of 4 years; rarely extended. The most qualified applicants get WUE. WUE student must remain in good academic standing. Students can’t use time paying the WUE rate towards building in-state residency. Technically, WUE is offered to a student for their first undergraduate degree. If student needs a leave of absence, confirm that institution will hold their WUE rate (they may not).

  14. WUE Savings Scenarios (AY2010)

  15. Population and Growth • The West is projected to be the country’s fastest-growing region between 2000 and 2020 in terms of total population. • The states with largest growth: • Arizona and California • Nevada, Washington, Colorado, and Utah. • From 2011-2012 the West will continue to grow & ultimately top out with almost 4 million high school students in 2018-19.

  16. State By State • Arizona and Nevada are projected to see their high school graduating classes nearly double in size by 2021-22 if historical trends persist. • Other Western states that can expect big changes by 2021-22 include • Colorado (29.3 percent) • Idaho (39.1 percent) • Utah (42.4 percent) • While California’s growth by 2021-22 will add substantially to the West’s total growth, it will represent only a 6.6 percent gain for the state.

  17. California ranks 1st in the nation for importing people with a Bachelors Degree, California ranks 41st in the nation for importing people with less than a HS Degree

  18. Growth and Learning • New location: weather, food, city, environment to explore • New culture: local norms, foods, traditions • Students learn about who they are by asking: “How did growing up where I did, make me who I am?” • Making new friends

  19. Probing Questions Students should know their academic profile • What is your GPA? • What are your test scores? • How many honors/AP? • Extra curricular resume • Class Rank

  20. Probing Questions Cont… Students should know their preferences • Do I like City or country? • Would I prefer visiting a city or the woods? • Individual attention vs. work well on my own • Do I like a lot of activity? • Do I prefer quiet time? • What environments challenge and excite me?

  21. Growth and Learning Cont… Students should know the college • The academic Profile • Class size • Student to teacher ratio • School population • Majors • Extra curricular activities • Campus and surroundings

  22. The College Application List The three tiered list should include 9 colleges total. 3 Reach Colleges– You academic record is slightly below the average admission profile from last year, but you have something extra to offer – outstanding leadership, community service, extra-curricular activities, portfolio, awesome essay, unique major, etc. 3 Good Chance Colleges– Your academic record is at, or above, last year’s admission profile. 3 Definite Colleges – Your academic record is well above last year’s admission profile. AND THEY LOVE THEM ALL!

  23. Out of State College Resources • What is RACC? • The Regional Admission Counselors of California (RACC) is an organization composed of over 60 admission professionals, from over 50 institutions, who work with students and counselors throughout California while representing Universities and Colleges outside of the state of California. All of these out-of-state institutions are NACAC and/or WACAC members.  They have dedicated the necessary resources for a regional office to serve California schools and provide information on educational opportunities out of state. www.regionaladmissions.com

  24. Out of State College Resources RACC Services • Counselor Appreciation Events • Guest Speakers • College Camps • Workshops :(Out-of-State, Essay, Interview, Case Studies, etc.) • Mini-Fairs (group visits) • College Fairs • Classroom Presentation • Parent Night Speakers *Please consider the RACC as your partner in preparing your students and parents to conduct an informed college search

  25. Top 8 Reasons Why Students Should Consider Out of State Schools • Specialized ProgramsAn out-of-state school may be a good thing to consider if the school specializes in a degree program not offered at a college near home. Some degrees – for example Zoology, Nuclear Physics, Veterinary Medicine, Contemporary Music– are less commonly offered across the board. • Lower Tuition CostsThe cost for attending some out-of-state colleges may actually be less than an in-state college. For example, a California resident attending the University of California at Santa Barbara costs around $30,000. That same student may attend the University of Arkansas for around $26,000, Purdue University in Indiana for around $28,000, or the University of Nevada for around $18,000. • Greater IndependenceAttending a school that is too far away to visit home regularly will require you to develop greater independence, life skills, and self-reliance. • Out-of-State ScholarshipsSome colleges are having difficulty keeping enrollment up and they may be offering more scholarship opportunities to out-of-state students. • Finding The Right Campus VibeIn some cases, the college environment may be a good reason for considering an out-of-state college. I • New Cultural ExperiencesAn out-of-state college may offer the student a new cultural experience. There are marked differences in the lifestyles of people from Southern California and Fayetteville, Arkansas, or people from New York City and Phoenix Arizona. • Career ProspectsWith some occupations, the college where the degree was earned can be extremely important. Institutions like Harvard Law, John Hopkins Medical, or MIT for math and sciences may significantly impact job opportunity, but it’s also important to remember it’s what you do with your experience, regardless of where you study. • Employment While In CollegeSome states have been more heavily impacted by the down-turn in the economy, so part-time job opportunities may be more plentiful in another state.

  26. Top 5 Reasons Students Choose Their College 5) Location, Location, Location 4) Size of the student body 3) Cost 2) I got accepted 1) It just felt right
