  1. The November Revolution By Devan Crifasi

  2. The November Revolution • Lenin and the Bolsheviks promised Peace, Land, and Bread. • As troops mutinied and another grim winter closed in the Bolshevik made there move. • In a matter of day Lenin forces had overthrown the government. • They quickly seized power in other cities as well.

  3. Under Siege • Russia signed the treaty of Brest-Litovsk in March 1918, giving up land and a third of its population to Germany. • Civil War raged for three years. • Foreign powers started taking land and when they allies stepped in to help their presence roused Russian Nationalism.

  4. Under Siege Continued • The Communists adopted a policy known as “war communism”. • They took over banks, mines, factories, and railroads. • The peasants were forced to hand out surplus food to hungry people in cities. • By 1921, the communists had defeated their scattered foes.

  5. From Lenin to Stalin • In 1924, tens of thousands of people lined up in Moscow's Red Square to view the body of Lenin. • They wanted to put his body on permanent display. It stayed in display for 65 years. • This represented that Stalin would carry on Lenin's goals of the revolution.

  6. Lenin Builds a Communist State • After putting down the civil war, he turned to his chief goal, building a classless society in which the means of production were in the hands of the people. • Gave all citizens over the age of 18 the right to vote. • The new government brought much of the old Russian empire under its rule.

  7. Continued • Economically he repeated his policy of war communism. • Factory and mine output had fallen. • In 1921 Lenin adopted the New Economic Policy, (NEP). This allowed some capitalist ventures. • Lenin's compromise with capitalists helped the soviet economy recover and ended armed resistance to the new government.
