  3. Purpose: • Integration of ATI Resources in a Concept-Based Curriculum • Evidence-Based Practice: Assessing Individual Student and Group Learning using ATI Resources

  4. Objective • Identify Strategies for implementation of ATI resources across a concept-based curriculum: • 1. Faculty Involvement and Support • 2. Curriculum Alignment • 3. Instructional Strategies • 4. Formative and Summative Evaluation • 5. Scheduling of assignments with rewards in grading schemas • 6. Student Accountability

  5. Faculty Involvement and Support • Who? • All Faculty will go through a period of uncertainty. • Change is Change, but, this one is good! • What? • What are the deficits in Student Learning Outcomes? • What resources do I need as a faculty member to help students achieve SLOs?

  6. Faculty Involvement and Support • When? • When do I incorporate these resources? • Where? • Where do I incorporate these resources in the curriculum? • Why? • Why would I want to utilize these products?

Purchasing • We tried this first • Bookstore—remember prices may increase to include “handling.” This method was cumbersome and required faculty involvement. • We moved to this option: • Student Fee approved by Board of Trustees to be included in each semester spread out over 4 semesters and prepays for an ATI NCLEX Review. • EASY! I just order based on numbers of students and the bill is paid for through the college business office out of the fee line item.

Important points for the successful integration of ATI are as follows: • Consistent implementation of ATI products across the curriculum. • Communication of clear expectations to students • Appropriate stakes in testing • Scheduledevaluation of student outcomes • Providing rewards for student performance • Creation of an active learning environment with student accountability • Fostering of faculty investment

What is it worth to the student? • Students generally do not do “optional.” • So, determine what outcome you want and make it worth the student’s effort to do it. • Student Success • Grading Rubrics • We use 2% of overall grade for ATI assignments • We use Proctored Exam as indicator of success only—not factored into overall course grade other than being required. Proctored Exams are required for course success.

  18. What is it worth to Faculty? • Standards in testing of Nursing Knowledge • NCLEX Review/Readiness • Assists in Curriculum Review: • What is meeting the standard? • What needs to be improved?

  19. Evaluation: Formative Goal is to gather feedback that can be used by faculty and students to guide improvements in ongoing teaching and learning and are lower stake assessments. Individual Student Performance Profile Topics to review with links to review modules, media clips and active learning templates. We assess student progress with success strategies using e-books and practice tests based on ISPP.

  20. Evaluation: Summative Goal is to focus on the outcome measuring level of success or proficiency at the end of an instructional unit. Higher Stakes Assessment. NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN Predictor Assessments • We use these in the capstone course to provide assessment of predictability of success on NCLEX. • Provides Individual Student Performance Profile • Faculty can also assess course profile of deficiencies to improve content for future offerings.

  21. Assignments • What? • Be very clear on what expectations are for each assignment. • How does this assignment fit into the course objectives/student learning outcomes?

  22. Assignments • When? • Are there time limits on when the assignment must be completed? • Can the assignment be repeated until a predetermined goal is met? • How many times can the assignment be repeated? How often?

  23. Assignments • Why? • How will student effort/success be evaluated? • Grading Rubric/Schema? And, if a student chooses not to do the assignment? What is the consequences of not doing the assignment at the level of expectation?

  24. Accountability • Student Involvement in meeting Learning Outcomes • Student is actively involved in the journey for success.

Evaluation • What are the outcomes needed to determine continued use: • Course Retention and Student Success on Outcomes Annual Retention (fall to fall) increased to approximately 80% • Curriculum Retention using ATI and Student Success Strategies Fall 2013 course retention 95% First semester Fall 2013 course retention 90% Third semester
