  3. Statistics! • Delaware – 4th in the nation for Pre-K Expulsion • Children with Lower SES might be at greater risk for expulsion (Qi & Kaiser, 2003) • A child is more likely to be expelled from preschool than K-12 (Gilliam 2005)

  4. Yeah….And? • Do they grow out of it? • When should I worry? • Behavior disorders • Internalizing • externalizing

  5. What is Autism? • Autism is a developmental disorder that is characterized by: • Problems with Social interaction • Communication Deficits • Stereotypic interests • Some want to add sensory processing • Usually diagnosed before age 3

Teaching and prevention of problem behavior • If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach. • If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach. • If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach. • If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach • If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we… • Teach? • Punish? • Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?
