Overview • Wexford Health Provides health care services to correctional facilities across the country We were incorporated in 1992 for the sole purpose of providing health care services to correctional institutions. Our 16-year portfolio contains agencies in 13 states as well as statewide or major regional health care programs for agencies in West Virginia, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming. Based in Pittsburgh, Wexford Health Sources is the third largest correctional health care company in the nation.

  5. WEXFORD HEALTH SOURCES • We currently employ nearly 1,400 men and women to provide clinical services for approximately 90,000 offenders at more than 100 facilities across the country. Most of our contracts involve the provision of medical, mental health, dental, and pharmaceutical services. All Wexford programs are designed to meet or exceed the standards established by the American Correctional Association (ACA), the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) and the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.

  7. Contracts • We currently have contracts in: • West Virginia • Mississippi • Illinois • Washington • Arizona • Ohio

  8. Wexford Health Sources contracted with the West Virginia division of Corrections starting May 1, 2008. We provide health care services in eight WV DOC prison facilities. These are Anthony, Denmar, Huttonsville, Lakin, Martinsburg, Mount Olive, Pruntytown, and St. Mary’s. We also provide pharmacy consultant services at Huntington Work Release, Charleston Work Release, and Beckley Correctional Center as well as Mental Health Services through PSIMED our subcontractor in the Northern facilities.

  9. Each of the eight mentioned are staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week with qualified, licensed health care providers. This care includes but is not limited to medical, dental, mental health, optometry, pharmacy, and dialysis services. Infirmary care is provided for inmates with illnesses or diagnoses that require frequent monitoring, medication therapy, or assistance with activities of daily living at a level needing skilled nursing intervention.

Services Offered in West Virginia: Mental Health • Mental Health Services are provided by our partner, PSIMED INC. • PSIMED provides clinically effective services that focus on patient improvement and outcomes that includes but is not limited to: • Outpatient services • Crisis stabilization • Transitional Care • Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Care

  12. Services Offered in West Virginia: PHARMACY • Pharmacy Services in our West Virginia contract are provided through Boswell. • Formulary designed to encourage use of generic drugs • Drug Utilization Review • Timely and accurate statistical cost and utilization reporting.

  13. INFECTION CONTROL – INTAKE ASSESSMENT Soon after arrival at the facility offenders are interviewed for: Fever Active cough Nausea Vaginal discharge (females) Diarrhea Penile discharge (males) Skin infection Jaundice Needle marks Swollen glands

  14. INFECTION CONTROL – MEDICAL HISTORY Inquiry into: • Frequent diarrhea • Genital sores • V.D. • Hepatitis • HIV • Persistent sore throat • Blood products before 1992 • Jaundice

  15. INFECTION CONTROL – TB HISTORY INQUIRY INTO: • Ever treated with TB drugs? • Previous PPD test? • Previous past positive PPD? • Chronic cough • Recent weight loss • Recent appetite loss • Fever • Night sweats • Fatigue

  16. INFECTION CONTROL – INTAKE TESTING • PPD testing on all new intakes unless documentation is available that the PPD is up-to-date • RPR on all new intakes • Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and HIV test offered to all new intakes • Other tests as ordered by the physician

INFECTION CONTROL - EMPLOYEES • PPD TESTING ON ALL NEW HIRES • YEARLY PPD TESTING ON ALL STAFF • HEPATITIS B VACCINE OFFERED • YEARLY FLU VACCINE OFFERED • POST EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS STARTER KIT OF ANTIVIRAL MEDICATIONS AVAILABLE IN CASE OF HIGH RISK BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS EXPOSURE • TRAINING IN INFECTION CONTROL ON HIRE AND YEARLY

  18. INFECTION CONTROL – KITCHEN CLEARANCE • Ensure TB test is current and negative PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT: • No open sores or rashes on hands, arms, face • No diarrhea • No cough • Lungs clear • No signs or symptoms of contagious disease

  19. INFECTION CONTROL – HEALTH EDUCATION Kitchen Workers are Instructed on: • Appropriate use of a hair net • Appropriate hand washing (including demonstration) • Personal hygiene • Report to kitchen supervisor if ill, have diarrhea, or a rash

  20. INFECTION CONTROL – HEALTH EDUCATION ADDITIONAL HEALTH EDUCATION IS PROVIDED ON SUCH TOPICS AS: • Hepatitis A, B, C • HIV • Other STD’s • Strep Throat • Ear infections • Influenza (treatment and prevention)

  21. INFECTION CONTROL POLICY & PROCEDURES Policies include but are not limited to: • Environmental Health and Safety • Management of waste • Universal precautions • Respiratory isolation • Management of TB • Management of varicella • MRSA control guidelines • Meningitis and encephalitis

INFECTION CONTROL – DISCHARGE PLANNING • Provided with referrals to community health care providers as needed • Given a list of all WV county health departments including address and phone number • If on medication will be given a 10 day supply plus a prescription for an additional 30 day supply • Instructions on prevention of STD’s
