  2. When and where • In December 1835, during Texas' war for independence from Mexico, a group of Texan volunteer soldiers occupied the Alamo, located near the present-day city of San Antonio.

  3. Why was it built. • The famous Alamo was built by the Spanish Empire in the 18th century for the education of local Native Americans after their conversion to Christianity

  4. History of the Alamo • The viceroy of Mexico authorized a mission in 1716, but it was not until 1744 that the first stones of the present Alamo were laid. Priests had the Catholic mission San Antonio de Valero built to use to convert the native Indians. The structure collapsed by 1756, and the building was rebuilt. Construction ceased in 1762, and portions again began collapsing. In 1793 the church was turned over to the town and the religious artifacts moved to the San Fernando church. At that time the roof again fell in, and the building continued to decay.

  5. Battle of Alamo • The Battle of the Alamo was fought onFebruary 24 - March 6, 1836. The Texans and the Mexican fought in the battle.Mexican forces strengthened to over 2000 troops. The total strength of the Texans was about 189 men.The siege ended on the morning of 6 March when the Mexicans storm the Alamo fortress. During the battle, all of the Texan defenders were killed.

  6. Weaknesses • Too much space to defend (3 acres) with Travis’s army possessing less than 200 men. A piece of the South wall, between the chapel and the main wall was built of fence planks and dirt. With Gonzalez 71 miles away, and Goliad 95 miles away, reinforcements would be tough to come by quickly.
