  2. USS Monitor and USS Merrimack The Monitor and Merrimack were submarine ships used in the Civil War. Ironclads are ships covered with iron. The Merrimack and the Monitor were considered ironclads.

  3. THE USS MONITOR The Monitor was designed with high caliber turrets. The Monitor was covered with iron that was 20cm thick. The Monitor was powered by a steam engine.

  4. John Ericsson John Ericsson was born on July 31, 1806. John Ericsson designed the USS Monitor. He finished the Monitor on March 6 1862. It went into battle 2 days later.

  5. USS Merrimack A.K.A. CSS Virginia The Union troops sank The Merrimack in 1861. Confederates recovered the ship and made it into an ironclad. They renamed it the CSS Virginia.

  6. Stephen Mallory Mallory was the Confederate states first Secretary of the Navy. Mallory designed the CSS Virginia. Stephen Mallory was born on March 4, 1861.

  7. The Battle at Hampton Roads The Battle at Hampton Roads took place on March 8th and 9th of 1862. On the 9th The duel began between the Monitor and and the Virginia. The battle lasted 3 hours and ended in a draw.

  8. Fate of the Ships Virginia sunk a year later trying to keep from being captured by the Union. The Monitor filled with water and sank while trying to to be towed from a sea storm.
