  1. Describe a time when someone tried to do what they thought was a good thing, but went about it the wrong way. • How did it work out? • How could it have turned out differently?

  2. Sometimes people try to do what they feel is right, but go about it the wrong way. Rebekah used wrong methods to procure the blessing for her favorite son, and it caused problems for her family. Yet God’s grace prevailed, even as His people acted ungraciously.

  3. Undeserved Blessings Genesis 27:1-46 family theme: God Chose by Grace

  4. Objectives: Know: God chose Jacob in order to accomplish His purposes. Think: Live with the awareness that God chose to offer grace and blessing to me through Jacob’s descendant, Jesus Christ. His choice was not dependent on who I am or what I have done.

  5. Objectives: Do: Honor the Lord with your life because of His grace, not to obtain it.

  6. God’s Gracious Choices Will Stand, Regardless of People’s Plans and Schemes Genesis 27:1-17

  7. God’s Gracious Choice Will Stand, Regardless of People’s Plans and Schemes The two deceivers obtained what they wanted. Their successful deception failed to promote honesty and good will within their family, however. The price paid would far exceed their expectations.

  8. God chose us by His grace. Self-promotion is not needed because we already have all of His goodness. • God chose to bless Jacob before He was born. How does it feel to know God chose to love and bless you apart from anything you could do to try to earn that love?

  9. God chose us by His grace. Self-promotion is not needed because we already have all of His goodness. • How does it make you feel to know God can, and will, accomplish His plan for you, even when it seems everything is off track?

  10. God Will Accomplish What He Has Chosen, In Spite of People’s Wrong Choices Genesis 27:18-29

  11. God Will Accomplish What He Has Chosen, In Spite of People’s Wrong Choices God had a plan for the family of Isaac and Jacob that could not be derailed by the disobedient choices of His servants.

  12. The fact that God accomplishes His plan despite our wrong choices demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the Sovereign Lord of all.

  13. The sin of God’s people does not nullify His Grace. He chose before the foundation of the world to forgive anyone who has a repentant, believing heart. • How is God able to bring about His will and choice, even when people do the wrong thing?

  14. The sin of God’s people does not nullify His Grace. He chose before the foundation of the world to forgive anyone who has a repentant, believing heart. • Why does the Bible seem to provide so many examples of people who acted very badly trying to accomplish good things?

  15. The sin of God’s people does not nullify His Grace. He chose before the foundation of the world to forgive anyone who has a repentant, believing heart. • What should we do when we realize we have set a poor example for our family or those around us?

  16. Defying God’s Choices or Pursuing It in Wrong Ways Leads to Consequences Genesis 27:30-46

  17. Defying God’s Choices or Pursuing It in Wrong Ways Leads to Consequences Rebekah’s “success” in obtaining the blessing for Jacob gave her little comfort as she pondered the fratricide approaching her family. One plot led without fail to another.

  18. The consequences of the various sins of this family illustrate how sin brings death and destruction into the world.

  19. Sin doesn’t change God’s grace, but it changes us. We can let the consequences of our sin lead us to repentance and a deeper reliance on God, as Jacob did. • What were some of the consequences of Rebekah and Jacob’s deception?

  20. Sin doesn’t change God’s grace, but it changes us. We can let the consequences of our sin lead us to repentance and a deeper reliance on God, as Jacob did. • How would God use the situation to accomplish His will despite the mess the family made of it?

  21. How does today’s lesson teach us that God is sovereign and will always accomplish His will, no matter what man does to the contrary? • Why should we always do things the right way, even when it seems God’s plans are being hindered?

  22. How have you seen people suffer negative consequences because they chose to do things their way instead of God’s way?
