  1. Behind the LinesIsabelle Holland • Task • Create a newspaper with the members of your group. Each person in the group needs to complete a writing activity from “Main Articles”, “Supporting News”, and “Other”. • The group needs to compile one newspaper with each of the articles included. • The layout and creative elements are up to your group.

Main ArticlesEach member is to complete one of these. • New York City Draft Riots • Civil War (events around the spring and summer of 1863) • Immigration in New York City • Emancipation Proclamation • Interview-Create an article that shares views from both sides of the Draft Riots (the wealthy and the laborer). Use characters from the story if possible. • History in the making …. – What events in history have led up to this tension in New York from 1825-1860?

  3. Main Articles • Use the internet sources provided to start your research. Please credit the sources used at the end of each article. • All stories written are to be in your own words. • Please type your article if possible.

Supporting NewsEach member of the group is to complete one of these. • Music – type of music, popular songs and artists, instruments used, … • Women-share information of one or many famous women during this time in history • Recipes-find recipes of era to share (3) • Fashion-clothing worn by women, men and children • Entertainment-What is it that people do in their free time?

  5. OtherEach student must complete one of these. • Create an ad that could be used in a Classified Section of the newspaper. The ad must reflect the needs and language of the time period. • Create a puzzle (crossword, word find, other creative puzzles ???) using information or vocabulary from the novel.
