  1. IISWC 2007 PanelBenchmarking in the Web 2.0 Era Prashant Shenoy UMass Amherst

  2. Questions for Position Statement • What do you see as the key emerging workloads? • What are the most important hardware and software challenges for these applications? • What are the benchmarking challenges for these workloads/systems? • How can university researchers contribute?

  3. Data Center Workloads • Different types of data centers • Internet data center • Youtube, Facebook, webmail • Enterprise data centers • Business, financial apps • Hosting platforms • 3rd party applications • Web, ecommerce, Amazon EC2 • Workloads depends on type of data center

  4. Technology Trends • Virtualization • Data center apps run inside virtual servers • One or more VM mapped to a physical server • Why? • Flexible mapping of virtual to physical resources • Isolation • Vary resources allocations dynamically • Live migration

  5. Key Question • How does a data center workload impact a virtualized server and vice versa? • Scenario: • App running on physical server • Needs to move to a virtual server • What is the performance impact? • How do two VMs interact? • Memory, I/O not fully isolated. • CPU: impact on shared caches on multi-core cpus

  6. Hurdle • Many research ideas • But… • Few good workloads • SPECWEb, TPCW, • Rubis, Pet store • E-commerce centric, what about other types of data centers?

  7. Research Opportunity • Business apps • Apache openforbiz • Traces • Youtube • VM workloads / traces • Need workloads for “large” environments • Representative of tens or hundreds of machines
