This project aims to develop dynamic models for heat pump systems, evaluate capacity control techniques, and optimize overall performance. Examples include analyzing COP variations and determining optimal mass flow rates. Findings focus on retrofitting strategies and maximizing efficiency based on design objectives. Publications have covered topics like retrofitting heat pumps and analyzing ventilation heat recovery systems. Planned submissions include comprehensive analyses of ground source heat pump systems and U-pipe borehole heat exchangers.

“Dynamic heat pump system with capacity control”Hatef MadaniDec. 2009
Project goals • Creating a “family” of models able to represent the dynamics of the real heat pump system consisting of the building, the heat pump unit, the heat source, pump, storage tank, climate, etc. • A quantitatively evaluation of different techniques for capacity control and control strategies for heat pump systems.
Result example: Variable capacity vs. on/off controlled heat pump system Dynamic COP of both variable speed and on/off controlled GSHP
Result example: Optimum mass flow rate of secondary refrigerant Overall COP and heat capacity vs. mass flow rate of secondary refrigerant at different compressor speed
Examples of conclusions • Retrofitting a frequencyinverter to the on/offcontrolled heat pump to omit the electricalauxiliaryheater • Finding the optimum brinemassflowratedepending on the design objective (e.g. COP or heat capacitymaximization)
