  1. THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

  2. Overview • The Animal Kingdom • Benefits of learning about the animal kingdom • Forms of technology to assist in teaching about The Animal Kingdom • Online Games and simulations used-online virtual environment of the animal kingdom-online quiz using power point-online animal kingdom activity • Benefits of using such technology • Interactive Whiteboards

  3. The Animal Kingdom • Term used for all animals that inhabit the earth • Can be categorised into different groups (vertebrates, invertebrates) -Mammals: drinks milk when it is a baby and has hair on its body -Birds: have feathers and that are born out of hard-shelled eggs -Fish: live in water and have gills, scales and fins on their body -Reptiles: cold blooded and are born on land -Amphibians: born with fills, develop lungs-Anthropods: have more than 4 legs

  4. Computer programs such as Inspiration are a great tool to teach children about the Animal Kingdom.

  5. Benefits Learning about the Animal Kingdom provides students with information about all the types of animals. Students will gain an understanding of the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. They will be able to recognise which group animals belong to such as mammals, fish, birds. Students will be able to distinguish between significant differences and investigate environments, eating habits and physical features of animals.

  6. Technology Constructivism has been included in the lesson through the use of technology such as online simulators, quizzes, activities etc. Students enjoy working with technology and are therefore motivated to achieve highly. Technology provides opportunities for creating learning environments that extend the possibilities of "old"--but still useful--technologies--books; blackboards; and linear, one-way communication media, such as radio and television shows--as well as offering new possibilities. Technology is interactive, therefore it is easier to create environments where students can learn by doing, receive feedback, and continually build new knowledge and visualise concepts Technology provides access to a vast array of information, including digital libraries, data for analysis etc

  7. Online Virtual Environment BittyBay is an online virtual animal kingdom where people from all walks of life come to meet friends, learn and have fun online. In BittyBay, you can play games, chat to friends, create your own "territories", collect and trade items, meet new people etc.

  8. Online Quiz Quiz based on the classification of vertebrates Provides students with a fun, interactive way to revise learning Students are able to work independantly or as a group Students are able to see the sort of effects which can be use on powerpoint as quiz is in the form of a powerpoint slideshow Online Activity A drop and drag activity where children have to classify the animals themselves. Constructivist activities which allows students to engage in the content in a different style of learning, interacting with computers and broadening their computer skills.

  9. Benefits of Technology Online access to course materials means students can study at a time and location that suits them and can quickly locate misplaced notes. Responsibility for learning is placed with the student, which is an essential step for lifelong learning Increased motivation in learning as a natural consequence of the engaging nature of interactive websites. Instantaneous feedback can be incorporated into the design of online materials so that students can reflect on their mistakes as and when they happen. Widening participation through learning materials that can be used for distance learning and are accessible. Student investigations can take place such as completing web quests

  10. Interactive WhiteBoards • They replace the scenario of a large group crowding around a single computer. The interactive whiteboard allows a large group to sit and participate comfortably in a presentation. • Allow teachers to display websites, online games to entire class, therefore providing the option of group work, group discussions or group brainstorming • Able to pre-prepare presentations to display on the board. These can include text, images, maps and links to other files, such as audio or visual files • Presentations can be used over and over by individuals and/or groups and classes. Ideal for instruction related to particular research skills • Allow teachers to record their instruction and post the material for review by students at a later time • Touchscreen allows students to be interactive with new forms of technology • Display material from sources such as CD-ROMs, websites, DVDs, VHS tapes and television.
