  1. Teaching is Contagious The Power of a PLC (Professional Learning Community) Karen Correia and Delina Wester

  2. What is the purpose of a PLC? • In groups, discuss what you feel the purpose of a PLC is. • Also discuss what happens during your PLC in your school. • Share

  3. What a PLC is NOT • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YXYC6NneQ8

  4. What a PLC is NOT • It is NOT a program. It is a process. • It is NOT a book club. • It is NOT a meeting.

  5. What does PLC mean? • An on going- process in which educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the student they serve. • PLCs operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous, job embedded learning for educators. • DuFour, DuFour, Eaker and Many (2010)

  6. There are two goals for a PLC • 1) To persuade educators that the most promising strategy for meeting the challenge of helping all students learn at high levels is to develop their capacity to function as a professional learning community and • 2) to offer specific strategies and structures to help them create PLCs in their own schools. • DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, and Many

  7. The Purpose is Simple: Student Learning

  8. Ensure that ALL Students Learn at High Levels • We accept learning as the fundamental purpose of our school and therefore are willing to examine all practices in light of their impact on learning. • “the fundamental purpose of the school is to ensure that all students learn rather than see to it that all students are taught-an enormous distinction.” from Raising the Bar and Closing the Gap-Whatever it Takes

  9. A PLC is… Data Driven Members of a PLC realize that all of their efforts must be assessed on the basis of results rather than intentions. DuFour, DuFour, Eaker and Many (2010)
