  1. Plant Biology

  2. Plant Processes BPS2

  3. Objectives LESSON OBJECTIVE ENABLING OBJECTIVES ENABLING OBJECTIVES • Demonstrate the process of respiration • Demonstrate the processes of photosynthesis After completing this lesson on plant processes, students will demonstrate their ability to apply the concept in real-world situations by obtaining a minimum score of 80% on the picture perfect plant process booklet evaluation. 01 02 Demonstrate the processes of photosynthesis Summarize the processes of absorption and translocation of nutrients in the plant 03 04

  4. Think – Pair – Share What processes sustain human life versus plant life?

  5. Objective 1Demonstrate the processes of photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration

  6. Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is the process in which plants convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.

  7. Components of Photosynthesis oxygen carbon dioxide • CO2 = • H2O = • C6H12O6 = • O2 = water glucose

  8. Photosynthesis Formula ____ _____ Light Energy H2O O2 C6H12O6 CO2 6 ____ + 6 ____  _______ 6 ___ ________ Chlorophyll

  9. Environmental Factors

  10. Test Your Knowledge

  11. What does the word “photosynthesis” mean? Answer: It is a Greek word that has two meanings. Photo means light and synthesis means putting together. It means that sunlight, water and carbon dioxide all have to come together and work together in order for energy and oxygen to be generated as products to be given off.

  12. What essentials do plants need? Answer: Light, water, nutrients, soil, etc… Light is from the sunlight, water from ground and carbon dioxide from the air.

  13. What are xylem tubes? What are they similar to? Answer: Xylem tubes are like blood vessels in a human. They transport vital nutrients to the plants.

  14. Creating a Colorful Bouquet Activity with Carnations

  15. Xylem Lab with Celery

  16. What is a stomata? Answer: A stomata is an opening on the plant leaf surface. They are responsible for exchange of gases in and out of the plant.

  17. Investigating Stomata Lab

  18. Can photosynthesis take place underwater? Explain. Answer: Yes, it just takes place at a much slower rate because the rays of light must pass through the water before being absorbed by the leaf surface of an aquatic plant.

  19. Steps of Photosynthesis • Carbon dioxide enters the plant’s stomatas • Root hairs absorb water and travels to leaves by xylems • Light hits chlorophyll • Light triggers reaction between water and carbon dioxide • Glucose (a simple sugar) is produced and transported to roots by phloem • Oxygen is released through stomatas • Water is released through stomatas Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pD68uxRLkM

  20. Activity 4.4.2 Sugar Factory

  21. Sports Center 60-Second Review

  22. Objective 2Demonstrate the process of respiration

  23. What is Respiration? • After photosynthesis has allowed CO2 and water to be converted to sugar and oxygen, the energy must be released so that the plant can use the energy to grow. Respiration is the method by which the energy is released and used and is the reverse of photosynthesis– the controlled breaking down of glucose, releasing energy for plant growth, absorption, translocation, and other metabolic processes.

  24. Activity 5.2.5 Refueling Plants

  25. Activity 7.1.4 Seed Viability

  26. Objective 3 Demonstrate the process of transpiration

  27. Think About It How do human bodies cool off?

  28. How Farmers Use Evapotranspiration • http://agebb.missouri.edu/weather/realTime/butler.asp

  29. Virtual Plant Transpiration Lab

  30. 3-2-1 Review

  31. Objective 4Summarize the processes of absorption and translocation of nutrients in the plant.

  32. What does it mean for something to be absorbed?

  33. Plant Absorption Hair roots take up water and dissolved minerals from the soil through the process of osmosis. Water moves from the roots and through the plant via the xylem vessels.

  34. Translocation • The vascular system of a plant is a channel for water and food to move through the system of the plant. • Movement of water and nutrients within plant • Occurs within vascular system: • Xylem tissues pull water upward • Phloem tissues move food from leaves to the rest of the plant
