  1. Electricity and Magnetism Josh Kwiatkowski Grade 5 Science Mr. Marlow

  2. Producing electric current • By moving a coil of wire in a magnetic field, electricity Is produced from the wire • Stronger magnets will produce a stronger electrical current • Adding terns will also increase the electric current produced

  3. Electricity • It is the flow of electrons • Also is a form of energy called electrical energy • Atoms are made of three parts -neutron -proton -electron

  4. Static electricity • Positive charges are marked with a + • Negative charges are marked with a – • Most mater is neutral

  5. Electric current It is the continuous flow of negative charges Electric circuit is the path on which negative charges flow A switch is a device that opens and closes a circuit

  6. Series and parallel circuits A series circuit is a circuit with one path to flow on A parallel circuit is a circuit that has more than one path to flow on

  7. Magnetism • It is a magnet’s property of attracting materials • Opposite poles attract and like poles repeal • The north and south pole are seeking poles of a magnet

  8. Two types of magnets Temporary magnets are magnets that do not keep their magnetism for very long Permanent magnets are magnets that keep their magnetism for a long time • Iron

  9. A magnetic field is a space in which the force of a magnet can act • The earth is a giant magnet • A lodestone is a naturally magnetic rock found on or near the earth’s surface Force fields The lines of force is the diagram of the magnetic field of a magnet

  10. Producing electric current A generator is a device that changes motion energy to electrical energy

  11. Electric magnets • A electromagnet is a magnet made when electric charges move through a coil of wires wrapped around an iron core • It can be turned on and off • Cranes, seprate different metals, computers, alarm bell, and electric motors have many uses

  12. More about force fields • A compass is a magnetized needle that is allowed to swing freely • The needle is attracted to the earth’s magnetic north pole • It is used to find direction

  13. Electric safety • Don’t use appliances with exposed cords • Never stick your finger or any other object near or in an electric socket • Don’t overload circuits • Stay away from high voltage areas • Never touch an appliance when your wet
