Journal 76 • Compare the nationalist movements in Africa and India from 1900 to 1960. • HW – Define Chapter 31 Terms: iron curtain, Cold War, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), United Nations, World Bank, Marshall Plan, Truman Doctrine, Warsaw Pact – Due Thursday • Compare the global structures and the effects of these structures in the state-building process in Vietnam and Korea from 1945-1980 – Due Friday • Terms: Korean War, Vietnam War, Cuban missile crisis, Helsinki Accords, nonaligned nations, Third World – Due Friday • Begin working on Cold War Choosing Sides Chart – Due Monday

Argentina & Brazil: 1900-1929 • Government helped elite/hacienda owners • Foreign companies (British) built railroads and infrastructure • Imported manufactured goods from Europe & US • Dependent on foreginers • Middle class want representation in govt • Landless peasants & urban workers ignored

  4. Brazil • Depression = can’t afford to import goods • Getulio Vargas – industrialization & state-owned enterprises • Import substitution industrialization – produce for themselves products no longer able to import • Vargas became dictator (ignored constitution) • Overthrown by military in 1945

  5. Argentina • Jose Uriburu – favored elite during depression • Juan Peron – military government – want to conquer all of South America • Eva Duarte Peron – wife appealed to urban workers = popular support for govt • Industrialized • Overthrown by military
