Potential benefits of online forums Making existing committee practices more efficient and convenient – • Encourage new voices to access consultation. • Enable direct communication between members of the public and parliamentarians. • Asynchronous online communication and discussion. • Enable flexibility consultation approaches. • Encourage ongoing participation, engagement and interest in inquiry.

Web 2.0 benefits • Enable new forms of participation and engagement. • tagging or rating content. • ‘Crowd sourcing’ of information. • using the ability of large group of people to act collaboratively to achieve outcomes. • Creating an ongoing community of users interested in the subject area of an parliamentary committee. - potential for more deliberative discussion of policy.

  7. Possible Risks

An inherent conflict? • Parliamentary committee inquiries need to control discussion but for online forums to succeed they require discussion to be free of control. • While online forums will be able to enhance/supplement traditional parliamentary committee processes, the full benefits of Web 2.0 are unlikely be achieved.
