FAMILY LIFE Changes in family-life during the 1980s:  • young people were remaining longer in education • women were taking higher studies  • education and employment trends contributed to the postponement of marriage  • the marriage rate was declining • the proportion of all new mothers who were in their late thirties increased  • the fertility rate continued its downward slide • the divorce rate peaked  • mothers moving into paid work required changes in arrangements for the care of the children But:  • the families remained the basic unit of society • families played a central role in shaping the health and wellbeing of all immediate family members
