  1. The Director’s Style

  2. A cooperative effort, but… • A motion picture is always a cooperative effort of many artists and technicians contributing to the finished film. • Because of the complexity of filmmaking and the large number of people involved, how can you talk of any single individual's style? • The director, however, generally serves as the unifying force, making the majority of the creative decisions, so maybe we can equate the film's style with the director's style.

  3. What is an “Auteur?” • An auteur is a ‘complete’ filmmaker. • Conceives the idea for the story • Writes the script or the screenplay • Carefully supervises every step in the filmmaking process: • Selecting the cast • Finding a suitable setting • Etc… Down to editing the final cut. • Examples of Auteurs: • Orson Welles • Quentin Tarantino • Others?

  4. Not ALL Auteurs • The actual amount of control that directors have varies widely. • Some directors who functions primarily as an extension of a big studio. • The studio buys a story or an idea, hires a scriptwriter to translate it into film language (or buys a script) • Then assigns the script to a director who more or less mechanically supervises the shooting of the film as directed by the studio • Most directors fall between the Auteur and Studio aid

  5. How do we study a Director’s Style? • Subject matter • Common themes in storylines • Cinematography • Editing Style • Setting/Design • Casting/Performance of actors • Narrative Structure
