TCMF Activities • 3 major conferences • Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS) 53rd • Computational Complexity Conference (CCC) 27th • Logic in Computer Science (LICS) 27th • Lots of cooperation and common community with ACM SIGACT (Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computation Theory) • Knuth Prize for career achievement jointly awarded with SIGACT • CCC technically co-sponsored since inception • LICS technically co-sponsored for first time in 2011, financially co-sponsored for first time in 2012

Initiatives and Special Events • New FOCS website with • Access to streamed video of recorded FOCS conference talks • Direct links to FOCS proceedings in CSDL and IEEExplore (hard to find otherwise given 3 conference name changes) • TCMF sponsorship of student conference registration • Co-sponsorship of LICS with ACM SIGACT • Culmination of a a 4-year process begun in discussions with John Walz prior to IEEE CS policy formulation • Involvement of TCMF and LICS steering committee with Turing Centenary

Future and Challenges • New $60 million Simons Center for Theoretical Computer Science at UC Berkeley to be regular host for every second FOCS! • Lack of sustainable base for initiatives • Insufficient funds for student travel support in 2012 • Goal: Increased cooperation with ACM SIGACT • SIGACT earns $80K+ per year from ACM DL and has $840K in the bank • I will be SIGACT Chair as of July 1

Future and Challenges • Strong opposition from community to placing their research behind “paywalls” in days of electronic-only publishing • A large fraction of research papers already posted on pre-print servers like the ArXiv • Proximity of the community to physics and math • Vocal advocates, even among senior leaders, for moving away from society-based publication if it remains gated • Strong support for “delayed open access” • At recent SIGACT annual meeting, community voted support for it even at the cost of losing a significant fraction of the $80K+ per year they receive from ACM DL
