Excel as an Analysis Tool • Excel helps an analyst take the vast array of data, organize it, analyze it and present it to an audience. • Goal is to design powerful, flexible, well organized spreadsheets. • Use good basic spreadsheet techniques: • Always use cell references, not data values, in calculations. • Separate data variables from analysis. • Place variable data at top and analysis below. • Use formatting to highlight and organize data.

Excel as an Analysis Tool • Cell references in functions and calculations change relative to the direction they are copied • Cell references can be one of the following types: • Relative – C15 • Absolute – $C$3 • Mixed – D$47 • Excel processes calculations using the rules of Algebra • Keep your formulas simple

  5. Excel as an Analysis Tool • Building a Financial Tool Kit: • NPV • Evaluating returns: ROI • Amortize a loan • Calculating future value (FV) • Use one workbook to hold many worksheets.
