Our Goals for the Afternoon • To articulate the purpose, goals, and function of the MSEC at Fayetteville State University • To establish meaningful relationships between the MSEC and the districts served by the Center • To identify and discuss the professional development needs of the entities we serve • To make specific, meaningful plans for the future • To enjoy our time of professional fellowship and learning

Summary of Science PD Needs Assessment Received • Inquiry-based labs for each objective • Unpacking the NC SCOS • Discrepant Events/Demo Labs • Looking at the curriculum from a STEM approach • Problem-based Learning • Inquiry-based Learning • Using the Atlas of Scientific Literacy to plan for instruction • Diagnosing misconceptions • Detecting gaps in learning and understanding

Summary of Additional Comments Received • Teachers are more likely to attend sessions that they can readily apply in the classroom. • We should also build in a follow-up process to see what translates to the classroom. • CRT – How culture can affect teaching and learning in science • Developing the “right” open-ended inquiry questions.

Focus of Professional Development from the MSEC • In mathematics, the NCTM Process Standards will be the research-base and focus of everything offered. • In mathematics, the Common Core State Standards will provide the direction with support from our colleagues at NC DPI. • In science, NSTA standards and inquiry will be research-base and focus for everything offered. • In science, the Essential Standards will provide the direction with support from our colleagues at NC DPI.

Focus of Professional Development from the MSEC • For pre-service and practicing mathematics and science teachers, the message will be clear that tapping into the critical-thinking and problem-solver in all students is the key to sustained learning and understanding of the content. • For supporters of mathematics and science educators, a consistent search for student engagement in classes is the key to facilitate that kind of instruction. • For parents, supporting and encouraging the problem-solver and critical-thinker in every child will ensure that we receive learners ready to do just that…LEARN!
