  1. Testing the Efficiency of Regular Laundry Detergent against High Efficiency Laundry Detergent By: Caroline Manion Grade 9

  2. Rationale • I wanted to do this experiment because HE and Regular detergent differ in price, so I wanted to know if they differed in quality. • Which type of laundry detergent is more effective in removing stains, HE or regular?

  3. Research • HE detergents are low sudsing • Most washer manufactures recommend HE detergent • Regular detergent has many suds which can result in washer confusion • Less suds, means less water used to rinse, thus making HE detergent more efficient

  4. Hypothesis • If both regular detergent and high efficiency detergent are tested on stained fabrics, then the high efficiency detergent will remove more of the stains than the regular detergent.

  5. Variables • Controlled • Size of Squares • Time stain sat for • Independent • Type of laundry detergent • Dependent • Remaining stain • Constant • Stain • Amount of time washing occured

  6. Materials • HE Laundry Detergent • Regular Laundry Detergent • 6, 6 cm by 6 cm squares of white cotton • Coffee • Water • Spectrometer • Graduated Cylinder

  7. Procedure • Cotton was cut into 6, 6 cm by 6 cm squares • Each square of cotton was stained in coffee for two minutes • The stained fabric was left out overnight to dry • Each of the squares was washed in HE or regular detergent, 3 in HE detergent, 3 in regular detergent • The water left after washing was saved and then measured in a spectrometer to test the absorbency.

  8. Results

  9. Results (cont.)

  10. Conclusion • The hypothesis was supported because the high efficiency laundry detergent proved to be better at removing stains than the regular detergent, as demonstrated by the graph, which displays the results of the spectrometer.

  11. Improvements and Advancements • In order to explore this experiment further, more staining agents could be used, but not materials with solid particles. • In the beginning of this experiment the procedure originally contained more staining agents, such as spaghetti sauce and salad dressing, but when they were run through to spectrometer to clear it, the light absorbency levels went through the roof, because there were solid particles.

  12. Thank You! • Thank you for watching and listening to my presentation! • Any questions?
