  1. Ecosystem and Business….

  2. Out Line • Biological Ecosystem • Industrial Ecosystem • Economy as an Ecosystem • Social Ecosystem • Business Ecosystem • Moore • Isansiti & Levien’s

  3. Out Line • Complexity concepts in Business Ecosystem • Complexity • Self organization • Adaptation • Definition • Conclusions

  4. Biological Ecosystem • Definitions: • The New shorter Oxford English dictionary • The Merriam-Webster Third New International Dictionary • Ecosystem is a path- dependent, small difference in starting values can cause great differences to the result. • The ecosystem 5 main types: • Grass land • Forests • Agroecosystem • Fresh water • Costal ecosystem

  5. “ typically, each species interact with a subset of total number of other species; hence the system has some extended web structure”.Ecosystem:.dynamic .interacting .competition between species.answer the change outside and inside it.

  6. Industrial Ecology: • What is Industrial Ecology? • An analogue of the biological Ecosystem, all materials are recycled by the change in both manufactures and consumers and this would maintain our standard of living. • This change means that different parties should co-operate by using each other’ s waste material.

  7. Economy as an Ecosystem: • The basic mechanism of economic changes are remarkably similar to these found in nature , the only difference between them is speed, as economy is much faster. • the similarities between the organization and organisms: • Relationships • Some nodes are wiped out and others crop up • Efficiency is rewarded by survival, inefficiency on the other hand is punished by extinction.

  8. Social Ecosystem “each organization is a fully participating agent which both influences and is influenced by the social ecosystem made up of all related businesses, consumers, and suppliers, as well as economic, cultural and legal institution”.

  9. Business economy: • Moore’s Business ecosystem: • “An economic community supported by a foundation of interacting organizations and individuals- the organisms of the business world”. • The life cycle of a business ecosystem: • The birth stage (more than just satisfy the customer) • The expansion • Leadership (profitability and stability). • Self renewal or death.

  10. Business economy: • Iansiti and Levien: Interconnected participants who depend on each other for other mutual effectiveness and survival. If ecosystem is health  thrive. If ecosystem is unhealthy deeply suffer. Success factors: • Productivity • Robust (surviving shocks inside and out side the organization). • Ability to create niches and opportunities for new firms.

  11. Complexity concept in Business Ecosystem: Complex systems contain many relatively independent parts which are highly interconnected and interactive. A complex system is one “whose properties are not fully explained by understanding of its parts.” this means that we should understand the whole and get the big picture.

  12. Self organization: The ability of complex system to create new order and coherence. Is a process, where there is no external or internal leader, who sets the goal or controls the system, but the events occur spontaneously and due to local interaction.

  13. Adaptation: • In biological usage adaptation is the process whereby an organism fits it self in the environment. • Three components associated to adaptation: • The environment • the adaptive plan • The measure of performance. • The whole ecosystem adapts to the external environment.

  14. Definition of business Ecosystem: It’s a dynamic structure which consist of interconnected population of organizations. These organizations can be small firms, large corporations, universities, research centers, public sector organizations, and other parties which influence the system.

  15. Conclusion: “Business do not merely resemble natural ecosystem, they share fundamental properties.”
