  1. Storyboard - Access Training to Prepare for UIL Computer Applications Contest Billy Edgerton EDTC 6321

  2. General Steps that will be taught • Visual • Input data quickly and accurately into a blank table • Create an update query • Run the update query and check if results are correct • Narration: • Read the objectives as they appear on the screen one at a time.

  3. Input data in a blank table(Camtasia Video) • Switch to datasheet view • Discuss entering number with num pad • Discuss moving through datasheet with Tab key and Enter key • Discuss not entering symbols or commas

  4. Practice entering data with 100% accuracy • 4 scenarios which you will practice • Print each datasheet when finished to have graded for accuracy

  5. Create an Update Query(Camtasia Video) • Go to Create Tab • Query in Design View • Change to Update Query • Choose table(s) involved • Choose Field(s) to be updated • Start Function Builder • Create Function • Exit Function Builder • Save Query

  6. Practice Creating Queries • Create four update queries that just perform math operations (i.e. 17% of [PurchasePrice]) • Create four update queries that use functions with all parameters defined in instructions. (i.e. Use the IIF function to determine if [purchase price] is greater than $15,000. If it is then [depreciation] is equal to 15%, if it is false then [depreciation] is equal to 22%.)

  7. Practice Creating Queries (cont.) • Create four update queries that performs math operation in conjunction with functions (i.e. Use the IIF function to determine the depreciation percentage as earlier and then multiply that depreciation value times [purchaseprice]). • Create four update queries that performs nested functions. For example • Use IIF function to see if [taxrate] is equal to 12.5%. • If that is true use IIF function to see is [earnings] is greater than $58,000. • If [earnings] is greater then add 3% to [taxrate] and • if false subtract .5% from [taxrate]. • If [taxrate] equal to 12.5% is false then add .5% to the [taxrate]

  8. Running Queries(Camtasia Video) • Click the run button inside query design • Go to datasheet view and check results • If the results seem correct you are finished • If the results have a problem go back to creating an update query and fix the problem • Some common problems • No results • All numbers are negative when they shouldn’t be • An error occurs when running query

  9. Running Queries Practice • You will run 10 premade queries. The instructions will be provided on how the queries were made. Determine if the results for these queries are correct and if not discuss how to fix the problems.
