  1. Comma Rules 1-5We will add on comma rules 6-8 once we’ve mastered these. Objective: Be able to properly place commas in a variety of situations.

  2. Comma Rule #1 • Use commas to separate three or more items in a series. EX: We will walk on Michigan Avenue, shop, and eat at the Cheesecake Factory.

  3. Comma Rule #2 • An introductory phrase is usually followed by a comma. EX: By the end of the season, our basketball team will have won twenty games straight. YOU DO NOT NEED A COMMA AFTER VERY SHORT INTRODUCTORY PHRASES. EX: On Thursday we are going to Hawaii.

  4. Comma Rule #3 • You commas when addressing someone directly. EX: Michael, please take out your book. I am happy to tell you, Karyn, that you have now earned an A. You should head home before it gets dark, Darren.

  5. Comma Rule #4 • An appositive is usually a group of words that renames a noun or pronoun and gives more information about it. The appositive can appear at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence. An appositive is usually set off by commas. EX: Tysley, my friend from Minneapolis, will be staying with me next week.

  6. Comma Rule #5 • Review: You should have already mastered how to use commas with coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Add commas to these examples to show mastery: Juan enjoys many kinds of music but heavy metal gives him a headache. Although it’s raining now we might try to head to the beach later today.
