National Digital Mammography Archive • National breast imaging archive and network infrastructure to support digital mammography using Next Generation Internet (NGI) technologies. • Hospitals at Univ. of Pennsylvania, Univ. of Chicago, Univ. of North Carolina, and Univ. of Toronto connected to the grid via secure web portals that enable physicians to upload, download, and analyze digitized X-Ray data. • Aims to improve access to and performance of breast cancer screening for clinical and research purposes. Fox Chase Cancer Center • PIC Simulations to study proton acceleration using laser induced plasmas • Collaborating with JAERI and NTT of Japan who provide computational facilities, FCCC provides the clinical application of this research • Data transfer requirements of up to 10 Gb • Goal to provide theoretical basis for laser accelerated proton beam radiotherapy • Monte Carlo Studies • Accurate dose calculation and treatment validation for radiotherapy • Typical data package for remote dose compputation is about 100-500 Mb • Goal is to establish network based treatment planning and dose verification for radiotherapy

Nanotechnology Course Delivery • Pennsylvania Technology Investment Authority awarded the coalition (led by Penn, Drexel, and BFTP) a three-year, $10.5 million grant for the creation of a Nanotechnology Institute • Developing associate degree programs in nanotechnology at community colleges in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland • Will start delivering courses using high performance connectivity in Fall 2003

CERMUSA and Rural Health • Precepting: • The design of the clinic's telemedicine prototype includes a dermascope, otoscope, document camera, VCR, and a computer • Consulting • In situations where a physician cannot be on site, local telecommunications provide access to diverse sites with the ability to relay images via Internet2 for expert review
