  2. First Spacecraft to Land on the Moon On February 3 1966 the Russian spacecraft Luna 9 was launched. It was sent to land on the moon safely. It completes a 250,000 mile trip and landed on the moon. This information was very useful because it told us many things about the moon. It told us that the moon is strong and can hold heavy objects. The Luna 9 also transmitted pictures of the moon back to earth.

  3. First American Spacecraft on the Moon The Surveyor 1 is the first American spacecraft to land on the Moon safely. It took 63 hours and 36 minutes for the Surveyor 1 to successfully land. It was only 9 miles off its target in the Oceanus Procellarum. The spacecraft took more than 11,000 pictures before its energy sources were depleted. The surveyor was a unique spacecraft because of its landing.

  4. First US Space Tragedy On your right are 3 great men. They are Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee died in a tragic accident. On a routine test of a launch pad a spark caused a fire to start in the crew compartment. A false wiring started the fire. Oxygen spread the fire and burned the launch pad burned. They are some of NASA’s greatest astronauts. They helped tested the Apollo 1 and many more spacecrafts and rockets.

  5. First Moon Orbit On your right is the Zond 5. The soviet union launched this spacecraft to orbit the moon. It became the first spacecraft to orbit the moon and return. Although the Zond 5 returned to earth it did not land safely. It landed in the Atlantic ocean. On your right is the Zond 5. Pieces of the Zond were destroyed on its way in space.

  6. First Manned Moon Orbit On December 21, 1968 Apollo 8 was launched. Frank Borman, James A. Lovell, Jr. and William A. Anders were on the rocket. The mission was successful and orbited the moon 10 times in 6 days. Because of this success more information has been retrieved so that man can land on the moon. On your left is the Apollo 8. This rocket had to be launched in a clear zone area with no people or animals around it. This is because of the smoke and danger it could cause.

  7. First Manned Moon Landing On July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The crew that landed on the moon contained of Neil Armstrong , Alan Shepard and  Edwin Aldrin Jr. They took their first steps on the moon. Before the launch they played a golf game. They didn’t get to finish the game so they continued it on the moon.

  8. First Landing On Venus On your right is the Soviet Venera 7. It is the first probe to land on the surface of Venus. During the time it was on Venus it transmitted a 23 minute video of the area. It also sent a few pictures until it was destroyed. The heat and pressure of Venus destroyed the probe. On your left is the probe. Due to the wings and base it successfully landed softly on Venus.
