CULTURE: • Thailand’s culture was influenced by other cultures like Chinese, Lao, Burmese, Cambodian and the Indian cultures. • The culture of Thailand is also influenced by where Thailand is located on the Earth. • The visual art of Thailand was traditionally Buddhist • The most popular sport in Thailand is soccer. • An important holiday in the Thai culture is Thai new year. On Thai new year, which lasts from April 13 – April 15 every year, people usually squirt water at each other with squirt guns, and throw scented talcum powder at each other to symbolize cleansing.

FOOD: • Rice is the most common food found in Thailand. • People in Thailand don’t like to have rice alone, so they usually have a side dish with it. • People in Thailand will eat rice for any meal in the day, including breakfast. • The food in Thailand is known for being hot & spicy. • In the south, food is spicy, hot, and salty, but never sweet.

  4. MUSIC: • Today, the music in Thailand comes from modern Asian, European and American types of music. • The most popular types of music in Thailand are lukthung, or Thai country music, and mor lam, or Thai folk dance music, which are more like the music of Laos.

GEOGRAPHY: • Thailand is 514,000 square kilometers. • It lies in the southeastern part of Asia. • Where Thailand is located influenced their culture and society. • Most of Thailand has a warm, tropical climate. • Mountains cover much of northern Thailand. • Burma, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia border Thailand.

HISTORY: • Thailand has been inhabited by humans at least since the Paleolithic period, about 40,000 years ago. • Thailand was established in the mid fourteenth century. • Thailand was known as Siam until 1939. • In alliance with Japan during World War 2, Thailand became a US treaty ally in 1954 after sending troops to Korea and fighting with the US in Vietnam. • Before the arrival of the Thai people and culture into what is now Thailand, the region was home to a number of indigenous Malay civilizations.

  7. ANIMALS: • Elephant- Elephants have always played an important role in Thailand. Ten years ago there was around 4,000 elephants in Thailand. Today, around 2,500 remain. • Snake- The snake plays an important role in the Thai religion, Buddhism. If you see a snake pass in front of you, it is believed that you will receive money within the next few days. • Tiger- Tigers are endangered in Thailand, there is less than 150. Tigers are killed for their bones, and skin. They are used in traditional Chinese medicines.

PEOPLE: • The population of Thailand is 66,720,153. • The ethnicity of Thailand is, Thai (75%), Chinese (14%), other (11%). • The life expectancy for a typical person living in Thailand is around 73 years. • The religions that exist in Thailand are, Buddhist 94.6%, Muslim 4.6%, Christian 0.7%, other 0.1%. • The people of Thailand like to have a close relationship with their family members, and like spending time with them. • Several generations of one family will often live in one house.

  9. RANDOM FACTS: • April is the hottest month in Thailand. • Hula hooping has become popular in Thailand in the past year. • In Thailand you have to take your shoes off in school and at church. • There are stray dogs everywhere. • Hello Kitty is popular in Thailand.
