Euclid: The Father of Geometry By: Lauren Oreto
Euclid’s Origin • Born in Greece in 325 B.C. • Family was wealthy • Raised in Greece; as a grown man, resided in Alexandria, Egypt • Graduated from Plato’s school in ancient Greece
The Elements • Basic Properties of triangles, parallelograms, and circles • Common Notions • Plane geometry • Solid Geometry • Number Theory
Basic Properties • Triangles- classified by their sides or angles
Basic Properties • Parallelogram- a quadrilateral with parallel opposite sides; rectangles, squares & rhombuses http://www.mathopenref.com/rhombus.html
Basic Properties • Circle- shape where the edges are the same distance from the center all the way around
Common Notions If a=b and c=b, then a=c 2+6=8 394+888=1,282 970-672=298 If triangles ABC and EGF can be placed on one another and AB and EG are congruent. • Things that are equal to the same things are also equal to one another. • If equals are added to equals, they are also equal. • If equals are subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal. • Things which coincide to one another are equal to one another. • The whole is greater than the part.
Plane Geometry • Shapes on a flat surface; infinitely large but lie on a flat sheet • Deal with flat shapes like triangles, hexagons, squares, circles, etc.
Solid Geometry • Shapes that exist in more than one dimension (three dimensional geometry) • Deal with shapes like the cube, sphere, cylinder, pyramid, etc.
Number Theory Prime Numbers Composite Numbers Integer Only divisible by 1 and itself Ex: 3, 5, 7, 11, 13 Integer Divisible by three or more numbers Ex: 2, 4, 6, 27, 100
