  1. Notes les 22-23 octobre L’imparfait (The Imperfect Tense) Qu’est-ce que tu aimais faire quand tu étais petite? (What did you like to do when you were little?) Comment s’appelait ton meilleur ami? (What was your best friend’s name?)

  2. French uses several tenses to express actions in the past. You have already learned the passé composé, which is used to express actions that started and ended at a specific time in the past. Je suis alléà la plage le weekend dernier. (I went to the beach last weekend.)

  3. The imperfect tense (l’imparfait) is used to express past actions that were habitual or on-going. It is also used to describe people and things physically or emotionally in the past. No attention is paid to when the action started or ended. English often uses the expressions used to or would to express this idea. J’allais à la plage tous les weekends quand j’habitais en Californie. (I used to go to the beach every weekend when I lived in California.)

  4. L’imparfait The imperfect is formed using the nous form of the present tense, dropping the –ons at the end of the verb and adding the appropriate endings.

  7. The imperfect of all verbs except être is formed the same way : AVOIR nous avons → j’avais FAIRE nous faisons → je faisais MANGER nous mangeons → je mangeais

  8. ÊTRE is the only irregular verb in the imperfect : ÊTRE j’étais nous étions tu étais vous étiez il/elle/on était ils/elles étaient
