This paper discusses - • Analyzing user’s instant messaging (IM) behavior • Gathering metrics on user behavior – • How often a user chats with others • Time he spends on IM with a particular contact • Frequency of chat with a particular contact • Average duration of IM conversation. • Gathering data on users • They were from a variety of groups at IBM.They were between age of 20 -30 years old. • Their chat logs were generated by the IBM Sametime 7.5 IM application • They volunteered to share their chat data.

  3. Measurements • What users do I talk to more often? • What is the typical length of my conversations? • What days of the week do I user IM more? • What month has more activity compared to others?

Conclusions • IM usage between users can be quite useful in IT planning, social networking and productivity improvements. • Study of inter-user IM pattern can help understand workplace dynamics. • IM behavior between users can be used to form high performance teams. • Study between IM, phone, and email usage of a user together can be used to plan IT cost planning.
